How about some beef for lunch? asked ole mate Thomas and we nodded yes. ‘But where?’ we queried. ‘It’s a small place, I’ve been there and the beef rocks’, Thomas answered confidently.
That settled it. You don’t doubt Thomas when he talks of food. Like Deadheads following the band, we had to go check it out. As we walked in, it felt like breaking thru a time wrap into a retro ‘70s Kerala eatery.
Vintage Map Litho posters of Malayalam films, standard chai shop tables and benches and to top it all Yesudas crooning through speakers fitted into an old valve radio. ‘Meals, Parottas, Beef Fry and Beef Roast!’ The words tumbled out of Thomas’s mouth with all the weight of army colonel, sure of what he was doing. (There was no menu card. I guess we came for Beef so Thomas wanted no deviation from the agenda.)
The meal was served on a banana leaf. We reached out for each dish as they were spooned in. Lime pickle, coconut chammandi (chutney), Green gram and bottle gourd thoran, veg theeyal and cucumber pulisseri followed by the traditional Kerala brown rice and sambar. We all nodded in approval like family elders at a wedding sadya. And then came the beef.
Tender moist pieces of beef chunks smothered in a masala of roasted spices and small onions. The plate oozed with decadence, each bite as rewarding, flavourful and satisfying as the first. I honestly declare this is one of the two best beef roasts I have had in Bengaluru, coz I went on to order a second serving of this sinful roast.
After washing down the most satisfying meal (I have had in a restaurant in a long time) with some kerala tea, we chatted up the jovial owner. He confessed that his passion for food comes from his bloodline with the famous AZAD restaurant group in Thiruvananthapuram and his stint as a chef in a cruise liner.
As is typical with any outstanding restaurant experience, I’ve already assembled a mental hit list of items that we need to try on our next visit to Veruthe Oru Thattukada. We’ll be back. Next time it will be fish. But only after a plate...
Read moreI've been visiting VOT since mid of 2015. If you are in search for authentic Kerala cuisine, then, this is one place you don't want to miss out. It'll be unfair if I don't say, "Their food tastes one notch better than my mom's preparation!!" :o) Unlike some places where food can taste different after having it enough times, they've been maintaining consistent taste for all their dishes year after year. You'll notice that they serve food in plantain leaves and I like that mood! I love their biriyanis and Kerala meals. I can have their Kerala porotta + beef fry (or beef roast) combo every other day! Their BDF is also nice. They also serve appam, puttu etc. If you are in mood for a light breakfast, try their thattu dosa with chutney and sambar. You won't regret! If you want to try something different on weekends, ask for their duck roast or kada (quail) fry. It you're a fish lover, they have fish fry, fish curry, fish molly, fish mappas etc. Their Karimeen (pearl-spot) polichathu is definitely worth an ask! If you're too lucky, you'll get crab roast too! The owner Asif is very friendly, so are the staff. Asif has made good enough attempts to maintain an overall Kerala/Mal vibe to his restaurant with malayalam movie posters from the '80s and '90s on the walls but lately those 'local language lovers' (you know who am talking about!) wanted things their way and got him to remove all that. You can kill vibe, but not the taste of VOT's food! Take it on face value - "If you taste their food once, you are going to...
Read moreA popular joint for all the malayalis around. Our very own deli that serves good Kerala food and snacks (restaurant style). Aasi.. Asif who owns the place is a master chef himself and nothing gets served without his approval . You would love the guy, the way he runs the kitchen or interacts with his customers - simply put the guy knows his stuff.
The typical Kerala lunch is a regular feature and so are the Kerala parotas with both veg and non veg sides to go with it. Head to VOT early and the aroma from the kitchen greets you to the traditional Kerala breakfast of Puttu, kadla, dosa, stew .. wow.. needles to say they just taste amazing and you are reminded of the taste back home.
The kitchen is always churning out dishes, walk-ins, parcels.. but rest assured - you will be served well. Meet Pravin at the counter - his smile is equally infectious and so is his inclination towards ensuring you are attended to.
The name of the restaurant literally translates to ' Just another Deli' and to sum it up, it is just that and more... The filmy setup, the loud film music, the typical Kerala banana bunch hanging from the ceiling, the posters along the wall, the bench seating arrangement.. yeah it's all there.
Easy on the wallet and palate authentic thattukada cusine.
