Much has been said about Maruchi since it opened, almost a celebrated welcome given that they have a Teppanyaki Grill. We waited a while before we gave in and visited the restaurant because we weren’t sure of how it’ll live up to the hype and our expectations from Teppanyaki Grills.
We visited on a Saturday night and had the Fixed Menu - one meat and one seafood. They start with Pickled Vegetables, crackers, a small salad and soup. We didn’t have the soup, the crackers were great, the other two were mediocre.
Next came starters. Grilled Bhetki Fish and Chicken with a spicy’ish sauce. Both were good, not as good as we’d hoped.
For Main Course, we took: Chicken in Black Bean Sauce, which was great Fish in Chilli Oyster Sauce, which was average at best Prawns in Lemon Butter Garlic Sauce, which was a decent dish but more a starter than a main (our call this) Lamb in Black Pepper Sauce, which was disappointing Fried Rice without mushrooms, which were excellent Udon Noodles with Chicken, which was a good dish
Dessert was 3 Ice Creams - Vanilla, Hazelnut and Coffee. Hazelnut was awful.
The Fixed Menu also includes one cocktail per person. We had a to-order Penicillin, which was great, a Tiger’s Eye, which was superb, and then a Jasper, which was also great.
Overall, the place has a great vibe, good cocktails, but it lacks finesse. There are enough and more gaps in the way the place is made and run. The menus, for example, were worn out and stained. There was cutlery with stains too. Not to mention that I called twice to get a reservation but didn’t get a callback as promised, and had to book via EazyDiner. It took 4 prompts to get a refill of water too.
All in all, it was a mediocre experience. Did not live up to the hype. It is a somewhat entertaining experience given the Life Grill and the Great Cocktails, so go for that without much expectations on the food front. And yes, we’d go back because of the (relative) Value-for-money proposition as compared to the benchmark for Teppanyaki Grills...
Read more"Have you been to Maruchi? God! Its amazing", gushed my friend. So, I decided to give it a try. Conclusion in one word - pathetic. Went in, and the first sight was maids tending to the baba log.... eewww... I was given the impression that this was a lounge with great finger food and good music.... so tiny kids being fussed over by maids was the 1st shock. Okay... I moved on. Place is divided into 3 parts: the first is the al fresco sitting, the second is the indoor sitting, and finally, the live grill. Opted for the indoor sitting. Reminded me of a railway station! Anyways, in comes an illiterate staff... "Do you have kingfisher?" "Nopes, we only keep imported beer..... Bira and Corona...." wanted to tell to the pip squeak that bira is an Indian company run by some Jain 😁..... decided to remain calm and ordered club soda with a wedge of lime. Then ordered for food.... started with wok stirred shitake mushrooms..... Rehydrated mushrooms in thick sugary sauce sprinkled with sesame seeds - typical Chinglish recipe available at all "Chinese " dhabas with the difference that potatoes got replaced with fancy named mushroom. Then came the dumplings - stuck to the paper put on the base. The bamboo container was stinking..... and finally, the pièce de résistance, uncle with a burgeoning belly in track suit gawking at me continuously 🤣
Is this place a low-end restaurant/dhaba or a lounge bar or a nightclub 🤔..... they definitely have an identity crisis.... and they come a cropper on all fronts.
And what is this thing with delhi restaurants which think employing people from the eastern part of India is going to make them look authentic Chinese place 🫢...... It's downright racist
Did I mention, Sushi.... oh well.... Japanese would commit hara-kiri after eating it.
The only good thing - the valet did a fine job at parking my precious wheels. Chap...
