For whatever reason, we never indulged much in Bihari cuisine. Maybe it was a couple of bad experiences with Litti Chokha and we wrote off Bihari food available in fairs and melas. In fact we never imagined that fancy dishes from Bihar could be served in a dedicated cafe for this cuisine. Well, one visit to Potbelly Rooftop Cafe and we realised our assumptions were too leaky to hold water.
Potbelly is a cool cozy cafe on rooftop of a building in an intriguing Shahpur Jat area. We went on a week evening, looking for some vegetarian dinner options. It’s a beautifully done up restaurant where small space has been used wisely. Decor includes planters in teapots, colorful lamps and designer furniture.
We got a table on window side and once seated we started looking at the menu. For starters we ordered a Baggiya basket along with a soft drink and a Sattu cooler. Baggiya basket had rice based stuffed pockets with home style green mint coriander chutney. Though it was high on spices, the chilly didn’t overshadow the taste of the rice and lentil based stuffing. Sattu cooler was delicious and helped us gulp down these dumplings easily.
After that we ordered Parontha basket which was a platter of assorted parathas (in 3 different stuffings) served with Raita and chutneys. Paranthas were home style, light on stomach and subtle in taste. This platter tickled our taste buds and the amazing presentation managed to win brownie points.
The menu had a lot of things we never heard of and everything looked so tempting that it was difficult to decide. After some discussion and recommendation from the attendant we decided to go for Dana Jhamarua Thali as our main course. This consisted of rice flour based bread stuffed with poppy seeds and a mustard based gravy dish with potatoes and eggplant. The platter also had Sabudana Vada and green chutney. We loved every bite of the food and every bit of this experience. Another thing that made this dinner amazing was the fact that none of the food items were greasy (overtly oily).
And we can’t thank Potbelly enough for not having their servers don Bihari costumes. Almost all the Rajasthani restaurants in Delhi have their waiters dressed in pumpkin size turbans and in a Haveli like decor. Aren’t we bored of that!!! Potbelly hasn’t gone that route and kept the decor neutral and staff attire basic.
We were happy to have discovered another great place for vegetarian...
Read moreIt was my BIG NO to Punjabi food that day. This place gave me a nice change. Potbelly specialise in serving Bihari cuisine. It was my friend’s recommendation & so thought to give it a shot. We went there for lunch & looking inside the menu got much confused what to order as everything was seemed to be yummy. Also, it was nicely described. The first thing we ordered was Pakora basket, served with two chutneys. Pakodas – Baigan, Saboodana, potato & onion, were hot & crispy like very homemade.
For main course we ordered Dana Jhamarua Thali – it was Baigan & potato with marvellous mustard gravy, with golden crisp saboodana wada served with mustard chutney & Flaxseed (Alsi) chutney which really really good at taste, something made of baigan (was ok in taste) & Rotis made of rice flour filling of sattu & poppy seeds. I found ingredients used were of good standard which enhanced the taste of food.
I wanted have Litti Chokha – most famous from Bihar but was so full to have it more.
If you want to try some Lucious yet traditional Bihari dishes then you must visit this place.
Must mention: The staff is courteous and they helped us understand every bit of the menu. Good experience & recommended to few foody friends.
Service: was like very slow & so one less star to it.
Ambience is really interesting at rooftop but you need to climb big steps upto 3rd floor but food taste will make you...
Read moreA place anybody love to sit for long, but when your food platter comes before you forget the ambience because the food is just amazingly delicious. The flavour is inexplicably yummy. It's spicy but really delicious. We ordered Champaran Mutton and it was awesome. The moong dal paratta is also so tasty that you can even have it without any curry too. The complementary Gharam masala chicken gravy they gave was heaven and I didn't really expect a complementary one to be this real good. We ordered non-veg pakodas. Mutton and chicken pakodas 6 each it comes in it. It was also pretty good. The feedback paper provided with bill was scribbled with full love and happiness by me and I believe anybody would. Only thing I would like to suggest is that there's a single washroom at the 2nd floor like just near a store room which is bit inconvenient for people to climb down the stairs from above. However in one other angle it does gives privacy as well. But still location of washroom can be altered. Plus it's door can also be changed. And service i must say that they maintained high level of hospitality that we felt very comfortable but there was unusual delay in the orders getting placed which can also be taken in to concern. Champaran mutton was worth 600rs plus It's a highly recommendable place for Bihari Cuisine or if you wanna sit longer at a place for kind of a date or with...
