Over the few years I’ve grown extremely fond of the south Indian cuisine (apart from Idli, Dosa). So, when we came to Manali and my brother saw that there was a restaurant by the name Southern Souls which had the best rating, he insisted that we visited the place. To have the highest rating or recommendation, one would think of a cafe to be high end and flamboyant, so did I, but to my surprise the place was just the opposite, as close to roots and nature as it can be. After few minutes of waiting, we were told that they were sold out but the owner, who is so humble to call himself a waiter, told us that he’ll not let us go empty stomach. We took whatever he could provide us and just kept on craving for more, Kranthi ji and his wife fed us more than we could eat but we were still left craving for more so we decided to come back pretty soon. Every South Indian dish on the menu is a must try. The hotel has beaten good five star hotels in not only Manali, not only Kullu or Shimla, but the whole state of Himachal to be a top rated restaurant, mind you not a top rated south Indian restaurant but a #1 restaurant across all cuisines. P.S.: If you have some time on hand, please spend some time sitting with Kranthi Ji and you’ll probably end up having one of the most meaningful conversations of your life.

This place needs a tagline 'soulful experiences'. Its undoubtedly one of the best south Indian food in Manali. We've had too many memories with Southern Souls and Kranti (one of the co-owner) in just the shortest of times! Kranti himself is the warmest of souls and is the perfect host here. He gives you great suggestions, just tell him what you're in the mood to eat. The seating area is great with decent table and chairs. And either ways, you don't need a 5-star dining experience to taste authentic south Indian food! Must haves - 1) Paniyaram with red chutney 2) Podi Idli (don't remember the name clearly but it's the one with masala) 3) FILTER COFFEE (can't stress this enough) Do call and ask for a reservation as this place has limited occupancy and gets filled fast. And Kranti, thanks a lot for not only the delicious food but also to help us reach back to our hostels safely. Looking forward to our next visit and this next time, we surely wanna meet the head chef!

A family of 4, we traveled to Manali for the first time. We suffered with food contamination and stomach upset very next day. We tried few hotels serve South Indian food, but they are utterly useless in taste and high priced. Two nights, we had vomit and stomach burn. Looking at 4.9/5 rating in google map, we called hotel and spoke to Mr. Kranti Iyer. Although we went in dark, his staff served food hot and great taste. We started with Rasam shot and we continue to order Sambar rice, idli, rasam rice, guntaponganaalu and curd rice. We slept without any stomach issue on this night. Next day again we went to this hotel for breakfast before leaving Manali. My kids wanted to taste again as they felt like home eating. They don’t serve home delivery. Pricing is very reasonable. Points to consider. 1) a street lamp outside hotel, 2) faster turnaround in service

Let's talk about the food—oh, the food! Prepare to be amazed by the sensational flavors and traditional dishes that are served here. Start your meal with the Masala Dosa, a crispy and perfectly fermented rice and lentil crepe filled with a spicy potato filling. The dosa is cooked to perfection, offering a delightful blend of textures and flavors.

For those seeking a unique twist, the Podi Dosa is an absolute must-try. It is generously sprinkled with a flavorful spice mix, giving it a delectable crunch and an added kick of spice. Another delightful option is the Podi Idli, steamed rice cakes coated with the same irresistible spice mix. These dishes showcase the restaurant's commitment to authenticity and attention to detail.

When it comes to beverages, don't miss out on the traditional Filter Coffee. Served in a stainless steel tumbler and accompanied by a dainty metal cup, this strong and aromatic coffee is a heavenly pick-me-up. It's the perfect complement to your meal and a wonderful way to experience South Indian coffee culture.

One of the highlights of Southern Souls Food is their signature dish, the Mix Veg Paniyaram. These fluffy dumplings are made from fermented rice and lentil batter, packed with a delightful medley of vegetables. Served piping hot and golden brown, these bite-sized treats are a burst of flavors in every mouthful. Paired with the restaurant's special chutney, the paniyarams reach new heights of culinary excellence.

The combination of exceptional flavors, homely ambiance, and attentive service truly sets Southern Souls Food apart. The dedication to authenticity and the use of quality ingredients shine through in every dish. I recently had the pleasure of visiting this wonderful cafe, and I must say, it exceeded all my expectations. From the moment I stepped in, the owner's warm and friendly demeanor made me feel right at home. Their genuine hospitality and welcoming nature truly set the tone for a memorable dining experience.

Now, let's talk about the food. We started with the veg cheese grilled sandwich, and I was blown away by how fresh and flavorful it was. It was evident that the ingredients used were of top-notch quality.

Next up, we had the cheese masala dosa, and it was nothing short of outstanding. The dosa had a crispy texture, and the filling was a heavenly blend of cheese and aromatic masala. Each bite was a burst of flavors that left me craving for more. It was undoubtedly one of the best dosas I've ever had.

We also tried the plain paniyaram, and it was a pleasant surprise. The paniyarams were soft and fluffy inside, and they melted in my mouth. The simplicity of the dish allowed the flavors to shine through, and I savored every bite.

What impressed me the most about this cafe is its ability to serve authentic South Indian cuisine in the heart of North India. The flavors were so authentic and true to their origins that it felt like I was transported to the southern regions of the country. It's safe to say that this cafe serves the best South Indian food in the entire North India region.

Apart from the delicious food, the ambience of the cafe is truly organic. The decor is tastefully done, with earthy tones and natural elements that create a soothing atmosphere. As a nature lover myself, I was delighted to learn that the owner is also passionate about preserving the environment. Their commitment to sustainability and nature conservation is reflected in every aspect of the cafe, making it a haven for those who appreciate both good food and a greener world.

In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend this cafe to anyone looking for a remarkable dining experience. The owner's friendly nature, combined with the exceptional food and organic ambience, creates a perfect blend of hospitality and culinary delight. Whether you're a South Indian food enthusiast or simply someone who appreciates good food, this cafe is a must-visit. Trust me, you won't be...
