Mangalore Dry Fish Market (ಕುಡ್ಲದ ನುಂಗೆಲ್ ಮೀನ್ ಮಾರ್ಕೆಟ್) – A Treasure Trove of Freshly Cured Seafood

Mangalore has long been renowned for its coastal culinary heritage, and the dry fish market in the heart of the city adds yet another feather to its cap. Known as ಕುಡ್ಲದ ನುಂಗೆಲ್ ಮೀನ್ ಮಾರ್ಕೆಟ್ in the local language, this bustling marketplace is a haven for seafood lovers, especially those who cherish the distinct flavors of dry fish. Whether you are a local or a tourist looking for something unique to take home, this market offers an incredible variety of dried fish products that promise top-notch quality and taste.

Unmatched Variety and Quality What makes the Mangalore Dry Fish Market stand out is the sheer variety of dry fish available. From the popular Bangude (Mackerel) to Kane (Ladyfish), Prawns, and Anchovies, the market boasts an array of options to satisfy the most discerning palate. Each fish is skillfully cured, preserving its taste and nutritional value. The market is well-known for its meticulous selection process, where only the freshest catch is chosen to undergo the drying process, ensuring that the end product is of the highest quality.

Best Dry Fish to Look For Among the standout choices, dried Mackerel and Prawns deserve a special mention. These varieties are not only loved locally but are also in high demand across the globe for their rich flavor. The dry Ladyfish too is a delicacy cherished by many, offering a subtle sweetness that enhances traditional recipes. For those who prefer something smaller and saltier, Anchovies and Silverfish are excellent picks, often used in curries or stir-fries to add an umami punch to meals.

A Global Reputation One of the most remarkable aspects of the Mangalore Dry Fish Market is its global outreach. The high-quality dried fish from this market isn’t just sold locally but is exported to various countries, particularly the Middle East and Europe, where it is highly sought after. The export-quality dry fish undergoes rigorous quality checks, and the process ensures that they meet international standards for taste, texture, and shelf-life. This reputation for excellence has made Mangalore’s dry fish a staple in households far beyond Indian shores.

The Market Experience Stepping into the dry fish market is an experience in itself. The aroma of freshly cured seafood fills the air, and the sight of stalls brimming with neatly arranged dried fish creates a rustic charm. The sellers, many of whom have been in this business for generations, are incredibly knowledgeable and can guide you in selecting the perfect fish for your needs. The prices are reasonable, and there’s always room for bargaining—a practice that adds to the lively atmosphere of the market.

Conclusion Mangalore’s dry fish market, ಕುಡ್ಲದ ನುಂಗೆಲ್ ಮೀನ್ ಮಾರ್ಕೆಟ್, is a testament to the city’s rich maritime tradition and culinary expertise. Whether you’re a seasoned cook looking to add authentic flavors to your dishes or simply someone wanting to explore the local food scene, this market offers an unparalleled experience. The high demand for its products in international markets speaks volumes about the quality, making it a must-visit for anyone in the region.

Next time you’re in Mangalore, don’t miss the chance to explore this hidden gem and take home some of the finest dry fish available, a true reflection of the city’s coastal pride.

🐟 State Bank Fish Market – Mangaluru’s Coastal Heartbeat

If you want to experience Mangaluru beyond its beaches and ice cream parlours, the State Bank Fish Market is where the city’s soul truly swims. It’s not just a market—it’s a sensory adventure.

🛍️ The Atmosphere Located near the State Bank bus stand, this market is a bustling hub of seafood trade, alive with chatter, bargaining, and the unmistakable scent of the sea. The market is divided into two sections: one for fresh fish and another for dry fish, each with its own charm and crowd.

🐠 The Variety You’ll find everything from Bangude (Mackerel) and Kane (Ladyfish) to Prawns, Anchovies, and Silverfish—fresh, dried, and salted. The dry fish section is especially popular, with export-quality products that are sought after even in the Middle East and Europe.

👩‍🌾 Local Flavor What makes this market special is its community-driven vibe. Many vendors are women, and the place feels democratic and welcoming. Sellers are knowledgeable and passionate, often guiding buyers on how to cook or store different varieties.

💰 Pricing & Tips Prices are reasonable, but bargaining is expected—and part of the fun. Visit early in the morning for the freshest catch and best deals.

🌊 Final Thoughts The State Bank Fish Market is more than a place to buy seafood—it’s a living snapshot of Mangaluru’s coastal culture. Whether you're a seasoned cook or a curious traveler, this market offers a flavorful dive...

Its a passion for fish eaters the world over to visit Manguluru and savour the fish there. Fish eating is not only a passion but also treated reverently. With this in mind was my visit to the main fiah market at Manguluru, here called as Sbi market. The market is just like any fish market in any city corporation. Same smell, same hygiene and same kind of stalls. So no separate stars for that. Coming to the fish on sale, there is a lot of resemblance to the fish markets in Mumbai as most of the sellers are women. So you know how to or not to bargain. If you are looking for sardines or mackerels, any time here is good time, but for all other fishes make sure you come here early in the morning or else you can end up taking home stale fish in good packets. A word of caution: Be aware of the seasonal fish variety and avoid experimenting rare fishes, as you are sure...

The market not only sells dry fish but also offers fresh sea fish, river fish, and groceries. A variety of fishes are available here. The market is very close to the Mangalore private bus stand. I could see an equal number of women and men selling fish in this market. The fishes are reasonably priced. I am very happy to see such a democratic marketplace.
