Let’s be honest: Kethel’s Chicken Rahmania Attakulangara doesn’t need another glowing review. Established in 1910 (yes, you read that right—over a century ago), this place isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a legacy. For generations, it’s been synonymous with quality for Malayalees, whether in Kerala or scattered across the globe. The brand is so deeply rooted that praising it feels almost redundant—like explaining why monsoon rains are vital to Kerala.
Their spring chicken fry? Of course, it’s good. The recipe has survived 114 years for a reason—crisp, spiced with precision, and fried in coconut oil that leaves no guilt (or greasy residue). The rotis, thankfully, aren’t drenched in oil—they’re soft, fresh, and do their job without fuss. The accompaniments? Solid. The gravy is hearty, and the pickle has a humble tang, though it’s hardly the star here.
What I appreciated were the small things: the complimentary lemon water wasn’t the sad, diluted version you’d expect. It had a proper citrus zing, and the staff kept refilling it until I gestured to stop—no upselling, no theatrics.
Look, I’m not here to convince anyone to try Kethel’s. Its reputation precedes it. Malayalees swear by it, travelers pilgrimage here, and even Google will tell you it’s a landmark. For me, the charm lies in its quiet confidence—no Instagram gimmicks, no “reinventing” classics. Just the same fried chicken that’s outlived trends, wars, and probably your great-grandparents. Read moreThey just serve their signature fried chicken with chappatis (pickle and lemonade) there, was heavily recommended by friends and family so managed to visit it a couple of days ago, it was open around 10 PM, they serve a plate of 8 pieces with 5 chappatis as you pick a seat. They'll serve more chappatis as you go.
The chicken was okay, I loved the spicy flakes more than the chicken, they use spring chicken which might make you wonder if it's chicken or quail. The pieces are just as big as your thumb so do not expect bigger pieces. The chappatis were quite dry and small, personally felt that parottas would make it a better combination. You might want to soak the chappatis in the curry they serve before eating.
The curry was a bit bland, tasted like watery chicken soup. Lemonade instead of water was a pleasant surprise.
It didn't work well for me, I actually enjoyed the fried chicken served at Afzals chicken at vizhinjam, they serve it with parottas as any good restaurant would.
Basically remember at Kethels you're paying for the name not the dish.
Service was just ok not great No...
Read moreVery very bad experience.Went to attakkulangara shop today (02/12/21). The boy at the counter was busy with writing something (order or so). Received cash of some customers who ordered via phone or so. After 15 minutes of waiting the reception boy not even looked at my face nor asked what do you want. The order will take some time as they make chicken fresh, that I know, but they might have asked the person who visit their shop "what do you want" or it will take some time. Their attitude resembles customers as beggars who buy their food for free begging. Very bad attitude, after waiting for about 15 mins, I went to another shop....The hype of your hotel is from customers like us....but if you continue like this.......everything will fall down....doesnot recommend .....Should be hungry rather than visiting these types...
