Bar-b-que inn or Kingdom of Kebab(KoK) is a popular Kebab & grilled series corner in Kottayam. It is split into two compartments- one for an aesthetic restaurant & another peculiarly for the grilled series & dosa counter.

Speaking about the Kebab & Dosa corner, the interior is lavishly spacious, with a total dining capacity of more than 15 at a time. The cooking area (an insight of the smoky grills & the blazing dosa tawa, bestowing the rejoicing feel of fresh & hot food) is just in view at the front of the dining. Servings mainly encompass kebab series, dosa series, varieties of value combos with accustomed items like Roti, Stuffed porotta, rice items & curries.

A dining of 4 of us would cost just a total at the brim of ₹550-₹750/- for the above par excellence in food quality & flavour. Kebab series favourites include mainly the classic grilled Barbeque kebab, Mint- flavoured greenish Hariyali kebab, Hot, spicy, red- flavoured Teriyaki kebab, Cheesy, Lebanese Chicken Kebab with Arabian touch & so on. Paneer, Manchurian & different stuffed combinations of Dosa with the customary Plain, Masala & Ghee roast are the esteemed ones. Flavouring is absolutely impeccable, with no over cooked or under cooked signs. Roasting is all magnificent, serving best in a platter containing small chunk of rice, gravy, mayonnaise & salad. Dosa varieties are served with the usual items with at least any 2 different medley of chutneys.

Overall, ambiance and food quality are way splendid, no matter of comparison with its counterparts. The downside mainly lies with the serving time, usually taking more than 25 minutes for a Kebab platter (varies differently with the kebab ordered). This applies only for the Kebab series and not for any of the other dishes. Improvements in sorting of raw materials for the kebab grills way before the order is taken can be a favourable solution for this. Anyways, one time visit will be truly amazing, thanks to the spicy, gratifying servings of Hot Kebab...

My recent visit to this branch of 12 to 12 was nothing short of a disaster. My friend and I arrived in the evening, only to be greeted by numerous staff wandering around, laughing, and chatting rather than attending to customers. Despite the number of staff, we waited far too long for our order to even be taken. The waiter, who didn’t speak Malayalam, seemed unsure about the menu items and had to check twice on what was available. First, we ordered green salad but were told it wasn’t available, so we settled on coleslaw, though he was unsure if that was in stock. Then, after a few minutes, he returned to inform us that the curry we ordered was also unavailable.

When we asked about Shanghai chicken, he assured us it was a gravy dish, only for it to arrive completely dry – and as an afterthought, he brought a random small cup of gravy on the side. After 25 minutes of waiting, we were served one of the worst meals we’ve ever had. The coleslaw was simply raw cabbage coated in mayonnaise, with peanuts thrown on top – it was so unappetizing I could hardly keep it down. The Shanghai chicken was even worse: tasteless, lacking any salt or spice, and completely dried out, with just a few seeds on top.

To make matters worse, the waiter apologized, admitting he didn’t actually know the dishes. This really raises questions about the lack of proper training for the staff, especially since many seemed unfamiliar with both the menu and language.

Overall, it was a terrible dining experience, and neither my friend nor I could even finish our meal. We considered speaking to the manager, but he seemed disengaged and even asked us not to complain, fearing for his job. It was clear that customer service is not taken seriously here. And to top it off, they didn’t even have tea available in the evening!

Bottom Line: I won’t be returning to a place that treats its customers with such...
