Our Onam Sadya experience was completely ruined by Linson, the restaurant manager. Since my husband and I avoid carbs, I contacted Linson on Saturday to inform him that the sadya was for our parents (3 people), while the two of us would order à la carte. I specifically mentioned that we wanted to sit together. While he initially said this wasn’t something they typically do, he assured me that he would make arrangements. I even followed up with a direct message, to which he responded, “Noted, Madam.”
However, when we arrived the next day at 12:30 PM, we were greeted with confusion. As people were setting up the sadya, we asked to be seated, only to have Linson inform us that the sadya was only reserved for three people, and the two of us would have to eat in the Mattancherry Bar. This was NOT what we discussed the day before. If I had been told this arrangement wasn’t possible, we would have made a reservation at a different restaurant. Instead, after back-and-forth discussions, Linson reluctantly agreed to seat us together but said we could only order the sadya. Begrudgingly, we accepted. Linson then disappeared without further explanation.
At this point, our three elderly parents (all over 70 years old) had been standing for close to 15 minutes without being offered seats. It was only after I brought this up that they were finally seated. After waiting for a table, we were eventually seated, but the disorganization didn’t stop there. I clearly told Linson that I wouldn’t be eating the sadya and that my husband would have the non-veg sadya. Despite this, my husband wasn’t served the thoren, while our parents were. When I pointed it out, Linson’s response was he thought my husband wasn’t eating. How can a manager be so absent-minded and inattentive?
It’s baffling that no one stepped in to resolve or de-escalate the situation despite the fact that it was clear we were upset. My husband ended up not eating at all, and our elderly parents were caught in the middle of this frustrating ordeal.
Linson - you single-handedly ruined our Onam experience, and I will never return to Pepper because of you. It was an incredibly disappointing and frustrating experience, particularly given the significance of the occasion and the esteemed reputation of...
Read moreDisappointing service for a Taj restaurant.
Food quality: excellent, all the dishes we ordered were great. Speed of service: slow, took 30-45 mins for our food to come out. Quality of service: bad, they should take better notes of what is being ordered.
We were a little skeptical looking at the depth of the menu. They had Kerala local cuisine, along with Italian, American, North and South Indian food. We ordered a variety of cuisines and all the dishes were super tasty especially the fish and chicken dishes.
But the service took some sheen off our experience. When the waiter took our order he was writing it down on a piece of paper that looked like it had a bunch of other things scribbled on it. At that moment I thought our waiter might mess up our order and he did. The very first thing we ordered was a local fish dish. When our order came out the fish dish was missing. We asked him about it and he said we did not order it, to which we were surprised. He then said he'll place an order, went into the kitchen and came back saying they were out of that fish. At that moment we asked to see a manager since we were expecting better service from a Taj. After this we were given another waiter who gave us the dish we ordered. People at an adjacent table had ordered the same dish and we were given their order of the fish dish, we heard some complaining from their table. The kitchen probably ran out of that fish at this point.
In the final bill, we weren't charged for the fish dish that caused the controversy.
Overall it was an unnecessarily distasteful experience that could have been avoided with...
