Personally I could not ingest the food served by the restaurants on the Varkala cliff strip. Enter the saviour "Thiramala Home Foods". This is a small family run place and the speciality is home cooked meals with veg and non veg(fish) set meals. They serve on a banana leaf with rice, 2 veggie preparations and 2 fish preparations (mackarel, tuna, or sardines)with papadam. We love different fishes and upon request uncle gets fish of your choice. We had squids, snapper, prawns, prompret (on different days and paying extra which is very reasonable). On one occasion we had three portions of prawns, 2 meals, fresh pineapple (whole) for around 1000 bucks only (pic attached). Aunty is very warm and welcoming. I loved her cooking style and preparations. She even made payasam upon request. So if you are looking for hot and fresh meals and the freshest catch of the day head over here. Sure, it's friendly on the pocket but the USP for me was the quality of the food(I was visiting for 40 days). The best thing I like to hear when I am travelling and late for food is "it's over". Which invariably means we serve only fresh food and it's made in limited quantity. Lunch generally starts at 12.15 here and food gets over by 2.30 pm. Dinner is 7.00 to 9.00 pm (though reach by 8.00 pm) Oh yeah, upon request she will also serve hot egg omlettes. Conclusion: A place for home made meals for travellers wanting to experience local cuisine culture and fresh fish. UPI and cash are the...
Read moreWe recently visited this Kerala Mess in Varkala with high hopes of experiencing authentic and delicious Kerala food. Unfortunately, our overall dining experience was marred by cold food, buzzing flies and a particularly disappointing dish— the tuna fish fry.
This home-mess is run by a family outside their home, so it would be inappropriate to discuss ambiance. On the day we visited, it was raining, and we found it challenging to navigate the narrow street filled with puddles of water. There were lot of flies and mosquitoes that kept us busy during the meal. But they were kind enough to let us return to the main road through their backyard.
However, when our order of tuna fish fry arrived, it was clear that something was amiss. The fish was grey, overcooked and super-oily, lacking the tender and juicy texture that is expected from a good fish fry. It was evident that the preparation and execution of this particular dish fell short of our expectations.
Despite this disappointing experience with the tuna fish fry, the rest of the meal was satisfactory. We asked for meals with white rice and the Meals were served cold with white rice that was thick, resembling Kerala matta rice.. Again, not something everyone can eat. Sweet/Kerala Poppadum was also not given with the meals. On a positive note, the portions were okay, and the ingredients seemed fresh and of good quality.
I would rate my experience at Thiramala Home...
Read moreNice Kerala food (fish meals) we had here. Mackerel fish fry was also very good. Fish meal was Rs 150 and fish fry was Rs 100. Prices may vary based on season, so check price before hand.
What they can improve? Wash basin can be provided instead of bucket for handwash. It is very hot and u will sweat while eating there during the day in summer, even fan didn’t help. They can do some improvement in Tin based shed to reduce heat. They provide paper(plastic lining) based leaf instead of banana leaf. Either they can provide in banana leaf or just in steel plate. They were kind enough to provide us banana leaf when we asked for it.
Overall, food was great but uncomfortable to sit during summar...
