Last evening, I took a drive down to Kovalam. I wasnāt in the mood for the beach, so I decided to drop by WWW Restobar, the rooftop bar thatās part of the Turtle on the Beach resort. As luck would have it, there was a lone table with one chair availableājust what I needed. Arjun greeted me with the menu and took my order.
I wasnāt looking for anything heavy in terms of food or drink. Iām not much of a beer drinker, but on a humid evening, a chilled one can be refreshing. Since this bar is open to the elements, the only breeze you get is from the ocean. I asked Arjun if the beer was truly ice-cold, and he assured me both the beer and the glass were chilled. I went ahead and ordered an Amstel. Unfortunately, it wasnāt as cold as Iād hoped. I gently explained to Arjun the difference between a truly chilled beer and one thatās just cool, hoping it helps him set better expectations for future customers.
As I scanned the food menu, I noticed the Grilled Prawns, priced as per availability. When I inquired, Arjun checked with his higher-ups and the kitchen, and returned with the priceāā¹950 for four jumbo tiger prawns. I opted for the Kerala spice version, requesting it to be medium spicy.
After about 20 minutes, the dish arrived. The presentation included shrimp heads, likely to make the plate appear fuller. The prawns were not quite as jumbo as describedāstandard size, split and splayed open to give an impression of volume. I took a bite and immediately noticed the prawns seemed more steamed or pan-cooked than grilled. Also, they werenāt warm.
I called the manager over and asked him to taste the dish. He offered to have the chef taste it instead, which I appreciated. I watched as Chef Ramesh came into the picture, tasted the shrimp himself, and then personally came over to explain the preparation. He was very courteous and fluent in English, and explained that the prawns hadnāt been grilled on an open flame. He kindly offered to prepare a new portion.
This time, I requested the heads be left out, and what came next was a revelationāprawns grilled on skewers, beautifully done and with more pieces than the original plate. Thank you, Chef Ramesh, for taking customer feedback seriously and going the extra mile.
I ate four and left two on the plate, hoping the team would understand the message.
Despite the hiccup, I look forward to returningāto the food, the service, and that stunning rooftop view overlooking the ocean. I truly hope Turtle on the Beach continues to uphold the reputation it once had under its...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI liked the place, but they don't have a wide variety of food items on the menu. Also, don't go there with high expectations, as there's no loud music playing, only a tiny Bluetooth speaker that plays mild techno. I went there hoping to drink and dance, as I had done in many pubs in foreign countries, and I wanted to experience the nightlife in Kerala too, however, it was quite disappointing. I even requested them to raise the volume of the music, but they refused, saying that guests would complain. I had just returned from Tomorrowland in Belgium, and comparing it to that experience, this place was underwhelming. In my opinion, if you're looking for nightlife in Kerala, this is not the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWhat a brilliant bar; great drinks, fabulous food, lovely view and excellent service from Villith. We went in at lunchtime and had drinks and a snack and enjoyed it so much we went back in the evening for dinner. The menu looks like they only do snacks and light meals but ask about the specials. We had the fish platter which is the best I've ever eaten. There was so much we couldn't eat it all. It is more expensive than most of the restaurants in the area but it was worth every penny, we will definitely be...
