Authentic Kolkata Kachori Experience
Kolkata's breakfast scene is synonymous with kachori, and this shop is a quintessential example of the city's rich culinary tradition. With so many kachori shops scattered across Kolkata, each boasting its own distinct flavor, it's important to set the record straight: this particular spot may not claim the title of the best, but it certainly has a history and a loyal following that speaks volumes.
Yes, when a shop serves a massive crowd in a short period, there's a chance you might end up with a slightly oily kachori. But here's the thing—if you raise the issue, they are quick to replace it without fuss. This responsiveness adds to the experience, reminding you that this is a bustling, authentic Kolkata kachori shop, not a sanitized chain restaurant.
The kachoris here are a one-of-a-kind treat. For just ₹40, you get a plate of four medium-sized kachoris served with a flavorful aloo ki sabzi and a sprinkling of bhujia that somehow elevates the entire dish. And let's not forget the jalebis—they're available too, adding a sweet contrast to the savory delight.
Some reviewers have pointed out that the place can appear dirty. I would argue that this is a byproduct of the sheer volume of business being done here. The owner, Lali Bhaiya, is so occupied with managing orders and keeping up with the demand that things can get a bit messy. But rest assured, the food is hygienic—I've eaten here myself, and the flavors are worth it.
This shop has been serving Kolkata for over 50 years, and Lali Bhaiya is a morning fixture, presiding over the operations until around noon. If you stop by in the evening, you'll still find snacks, but you won't get to meet the man behind the magic.
In short, don't let a few negative reviews deter you. This place offers a raw, unfiltered taste of Kolkata's street food culture. It's an experience you shouldn't miss when you're in the city.
To clarify, this review isn't based on just a single visit; I've been enjoying these kachoris for years, having grown up eating them every morning. I can never stop at just one plate—two is the minimum for me. This is all based on my personal experience, though tastes can differ from person to person, but it's hard to imagine anyone not finding the...
Read moreAfter hearing a lot of buzz about the place I planned a visit to the place. Before getting into reviewing the food and other details I would say that "All that Glitters is NOT Gold and All those Vociferously Promoted are NOT DESERVING". To be precise this place is OverHyped. It's good but not amazing. Few people get fame easily this place is one of that kind. If you are by coincidence nearby tye place you may give a try but traveling to the place specifically for having the kachouri is NOT recommended. Thr most annoying part is the service and customer management. As per nearby enquiries this place gets good number of customers daily despite that there are no proper means to address them in a respectful way. It seems that people are paying to purchase something exotic. Generosity and humility is completely missing on the part of the seller.
The kachouri are made of refine oil for which people are quite aware regarding the effects on the health. The way it is served is unique in a way and I appreciate the same as it helps to maintain green environment as it's completely biodegradable.
I had the opportunity to compare the kachouri from another counter nearby. The only difference is less crowd and the curry has a bit more gravy. Rest all like texture and taste are same. So if you r facing huge rush here you may opt for the other shop. The other shop is just at right side of the entrance of the road.
This is an unbiased review to guide people not to get carried away but the social media hype of the place and food.
There are may more excellent placed to enjoy good breakfast. So do try different placed and post your genuine...

There's not much to differentiate in taste between the two though Kachori & Sabzi at Pappi Chhangani is less oily and tastier. Kachori at Pappi Chhangani is fried infront of the customer which is an advantage while at Laali Chhangani it comes to the outlet from a nearby kitchen.
Space & environment at Pappi Chhangani is much better than at Laali Chhangani (the older outlet of the two). Hygiene at Pappi Chhangani is much better than at Laali Chhangani which is cramped and somewhat unhygienic. Behaviour of the young owner Sanjay at Pappi Chhangani is much more customer friendly than at Laali Chhangani. Mr Laali Chhangani seems to have a temper tantrum issue and is often rude to customers as if he's doing the customers a favour. Of course he's seen to be very pleasant to his friends and contacts. Atmosphere at Pappi Chhangani is also family friendly with enough space on the footpath which is not so at Laali Chhangani. HOWEVER BOTH LAALI & PAPPI Chhangani ARE HUGELY OVERRATED. You can get Club Kachoris of comparable quality & taste, with much better hygiene at many places in Kolkata, especially South, Central. Not worth going all the way to have it there. However you may try it if you are visiting Barabazar in any case.
OVERALL RATING (Food, Service, Hygiene & Atmosphere):
LAALI CHHANGANI (this heritage outlet): 2.5/5 (lower rating mainly because of the poor hygiene and owner Laali Chaggani's rude/ overbearing/ bad behaviour)
PAPPI MAHARAJ CHHANGANI (nearby...
