I heard a lot about this restaurant, so I went to try. We took three different thalis and one Chicken Biryani ( which the restaurant people insisted to try). We also oredered Tel-Koi, Bhetki-Paturi and Gondhoraj Ghol separately. The food was ok ok. Mixed reaction. Biryani was pathetic. The Bhetki-Paturi had insufficient salt. The Loochi were rubbery and we had to leave it. The rice was served cold. However, Shukto, Bhaja Masoorir dal, Tomator Chatni, Tel-Koi, Mutton-Kosha, Jhoori Aloo Bhaja were good. The preparation was tasty and fresh. The Gondhoraj Ghol was delicious, but the price was Rs 100/- per glass. Maasir thali was okayish. However the veg thali lacked vegetable. In the name of vegetable, it has only Aloor-Dum (which was served with pathetic loochi) and Shukto !!!! In a veg thali - you dont get any veg !!!! How rediculous. How is it a veg-thali then ???? The Thalis had no bhajas ( atleast a begun bhaja or some Potol Bhaja was expected). There was also no sweets (Dessert) item. Second - the amount of jhoori aloo bhaja was too megre. They write Kancha-Lonka r Lebu in their menu so prominently, as if they are important items. However only one very thin slice of gondhoraj lebu was served. I have been a regular at 6 Ballygunge Place Thali. I would therefore like to draw a comparison between the two. There they serve you items one by one. First they serve you Gondhoraj Ghol (which is included in thali), then loochi r Aloor dom, begun bhaja, potol bhaja. Then they serve you the thali side items. At the end they serve you gorom-gorom bhaat. At the end they serve you Chatni, papad, and Gulab Jamun. I suggest the readers - better go to 6 Ballygunge Place Thali - which is just 5 mins drive from this place. You will not regret. Not only the service is top-notch, but the price is also 25% less than this place. They serve you complementary Gondhoraj Ghol, two bhajas ( begun and Potol) One Dhokar Dalna, and one Shukto in Veg Thali. Soul of Bengal is better AVOIDED. Over-Priced, Service is deplorable(only two waiters for the entire hall) , food is served cold, loochis are not tear-able, and veg thali doesnot have a veg !!!!

A Culinary Journey Through Bengal – A Must-Visit Restaurant! From the moment we stepped into this charming Bengali eatery, we were greeted with warmth—not just by the owner but also by the inviting aroma of authentic Bengali delicacies. The ambience perfectly captured the essence of Bengal, with its traditional decor and soulful music setting the tone for an unforgettable dining experience. We started with the Aam Pora Sorbot, Gondhoraj Ghol, and Fresh Lime Soda—each drink a refreshing burst of flavors. The smoky tang of the Aam Pora Sorbot was a nostalgic delight, the Gondhoraj Ghol had an aromatic citrusy punch, and the Fresh Lime Soda was a simple yet perfect palate cleanser. For starters, the Bhetki Chingri Jugalbandi was an outstanding duet of flavors, with the delicate sweetness of Bhetki fish beautifully complementing the richness of prawn. The Patha Begun Modur Chandrima was a masterpiece, balancing the robust flavors of mutton with the earthiness of eggplant and a hint of sweetness. The main course took things to another level. The fragrant Basanti Pulao paired flawlessly with the smoky, tender Dhakai Pora Mangso, a dish that truly celebrated slow-cooked perfection. The Daab Chingri, served inside a tender green coconut, was an absolute showstopper—the prawns soaked up the mild sweetness of the coconut water, creating a dish that was both rich and delicately nuanced. Beyond the exceptional food, what truly stood out was the hospitality. The staff was attentive and genuinely cordial, ensuring we had the best experience. The owner’s personal touch in welcoming guests made us feel at home. If you crave authentic Bengali flavors in an atmosphere that feels like a warm embrace, this restaurant is a must-visit. We’ll certainly be coming back for more!

If you crave authentic Bengali flavors served with a generous side of nostalgia, this restaurant will steal your heart. Nestled in a cozy corner, it’s a little slice of Bengal that feels like stepping into a grandmother’s kitchen — rich with stories and flavors that time almost forgot. The **Bengali Thali** here is nothing short of a celebration. Each element sings a traditional tune — from the melt-in-your-mouth moong dal to the subtly spiced potato er bora. But the star? The **Hilsa**. Fresh, flaky, and swimming in a perfectly balanced mustard gravy, it’s the kind of Hilsa that whispers secrets of Bengal’s rivers in every bite. The **Mutton Kosha** deserves all the hype too — tender meat slow-cooked in a robust, aromatic gravy that’s both comforting and soul-satisfying. What really had me coming back was their dedication to **forgotten Bengali delicacies**. Dishes like *Chingri Posto* with freshly ground mustard seeds and *Chitol Muitha* remind me of age-old recipes that often vanish from menus. It’s clear the chef is on a mission to preserve these gems — and what a delicious mission it is! The ambiance is unpretentious, letting the food do all the talking. The service is warm and genuinely passionate, enhancing the whole experience. If Bengali cuisine holds a place in your heart, this is a must-visit — a beautiful homage to Bengal’s culinary heritage with every plate.

We visited Soul of Bengal for the first time on Poila Boisakh. Upon reaching the place we met with one of the owners who asked whether we had a booking. I had booked through Zomato so I showed him the booking. However it was told to me that due to poila boisakh they were not accepting bookings through Zomato and that zomato bookings came automatically without the knowledge of the restaurant authorities. But the owner was accommodative, well mannered & friendly. He made 2 tables available as we were 9 of us. After the initial brief fiasco, we sat for eating. Overall I must say even in that rush, the food quality was not compromised. It was delicious. Quantity was also sufficient. The service was also fast. We had ordered fish fry, plain rice, alubhaja, kochu pata chingri, macher matha diye daal, mutton, chutney, aam pora sorbot and gondhoraj ghol. Even though we didn't have any complaints with the food, our noboborsho luncheon experience was rendered disappointing by the waiters who kept on pestering us for the order. We were not even given the chance to consult the other family members before ordering. Somehow my husband powered through and ordered. One of our family members was coming from the airport as he was coming from Bangalore. He couldn't even eat the starter(fish fry) because we had to order fast and then halfway through eating the starter we had to rush to order the lunch because again the waiters were standing behind us pestering to order. He joined halfway through our lunch & some how managed to eat. By the time he started eating We had almost finished eating. We couldn't even talk to each other because the waiters were ready to clean the table. We understand that festival times are often crazy but we've never had such an experience while eating in other restaurants. We had reached by 12:30 pm. The restaurant was empty when we had entered. Atleast an hour of peaceful eating & heartfelt chatting was what we were looking for on New Year's day. Sadly, that didn't materialize. Stomach was full but heart remained empty. I definitely recommend this restaurant but not during any festival as they are still amateurish at client experience. I may visit again when it's not festival time but definitely not if there's...
