Neha Snacks in the Main Market has a prime location in an old building. One of the few restaurants in the Main Market which are at street level, the Neha has been around for decades and has watched Ladakh turn from sleepy, impoverished backwaters to the fine tourist destination it is today. It certainly knows its market and has stuck to its knitting. Its menu of dosas, North Indian fast food, and a limited range of Punjabi cuisine, think dal tadka, dessert of ghee jalebi and rabri, has kept patrons rolling in for years. More importantly it keeps its doors open during the long, cold winter, when most eateries shut shop. I'd patronized Neha in the winter of 2021/22, and decided to check it out again. For one, now there's a lot more room. An atmospheric unpolished wooden staircase leads to a first-floor space with 21 seats. So, less likelihood of people having to wait outside on chilly days. Its service remains stiff and a bit lackadaisical. Though it was lunchtime, the kulchas weren't available. So, I settled for what is called chholey-bhaturey, part of the breakfast menu. Big mistake. In Neha's case, it should be called bhaturey with an accompaniment of chholey. Or more properly chana. It was good I'd ordered a sweet lassi, since I was starving and thought it would arrive fast. Well, it arrived with the main course, and in an unappealing plastic glass. The lassi was the best part of the lunch. The bhaturas are well made and soft. But the chholey come in such a teeny-weeny bowl, that unless you're used to chewing on bhatura by itself, it's better not to order this dish in Neha. I'd difficulty getting through one bhatura, let alone have enough chholey to finish the second one. I preferred abandoning my meal. The chholey by the way is another story. They weren't chholey as recognized in Delhi or elsewhere. They were chana, and unappetizing. Disappointed with the meal, I thought of jalebis to round it off. They're part of the dessert menu. They didn't have it on this particular day. The Neha, is not a place where you'd like to linger, though it has fine street views. It's primarily a quick-turnover eatery, though the waiting time for your meal to arrive can be...

We went to Neha Snacks for lunch. I ordered chole bhature and my wife ordered a thali.
The first impression was disappointing there was a hair in my chole bhature, which is completely unacceptable from a hygiene perspective. While the taste itself was fine, this ruined the experience.
I then switched to ordering a thali, which was average. It was priced at ₹450, which seemed fair enough. But when we asked for an extra lacha paratha, it turned out to be nothing more than a plain spiral roti that you could easily make at home. Still, they charged ₹110 per piece. To put that into perspective: the whole thali is ₹450, yet two simple rotis cost ₹220. This felt more like a scam than fair pricing.
Another disappointing point was the service. Without even asking, the waiter opened a bottle of mineral water and poured it into all our glasses. Basic courtesy would be to ask if we wanted mineral or normal water.
The waiting time was also a concern it took around 45 minutes for the thali to arrive. When I questioned it, the owner politely said that they cook everything fresh, unlike other places where food is pre-made. While that explanation was fine, the coordination wasn’t when the dishes arrived, the roti was missing and came later.
Overall, the hygiene lapse, unfair pricing of simple items, poor coordination, and lack of courtesy in service overshadowed whatever good taste the food had. I honestly cannot recommend this place for the experience we had otherwise the taste of...
Read moreDo not be moved by the negative reviews. They expect street food served in a top notch restaurant at footpath rates in a tourist place like leh! We from Bangalore enjoyed the most amazing chola alu tikki, lovely paani poori/gol guppas and chola kulchas during our first day visit to this place. On the last evening we had the most amazing garlic naan, lacha paratha, chilly naan with Dal, paneer and Alu. The portions were all large and 3 of us found it difficult to consume it all. The quality of the dough and the breads was simply top class. The taste of all the food was delicious. The restaurant has a look and feel of Bavaria inside. The worst part if any was house flies bugging us without electricity due to some maintenance. The owner must use his brains and keep one insect racquet which is portable and chargeable and ensure that the place is free of flies!! This attitude from the owner is shameful. Had this place been in my city with even a single fly we would never step Into the restaurant. Wake up sir. Please ensure 100% not 90%! The insect racquet costs less than one dish of daal in your restaurant! You can see my annoyance with the detailed...
