I'm from madurai. During a recent visit to madurai, I took my family out for lunch at Anjappar KK Nagar, based on my [good] experiences at Anjappar in Chennai/Bangalore. I was disappointed overall and would not go back again.
The Good: This place has a clean ambience, the security / few other staff were very receptive and guided us to get seated. The food experience was mixed. Some dishes were very good, specially the chicken 65, crab lollipop, fish fry and the elaneer payasam. Seeraga Samba Briyani was bad (no flavor, in fact odd flavor). None of us liked it. I couldn't finish half of it.
The ugly: The bearer (who was taking the order) wasn't even interested in his job. He always had a frowning face. Never even looks at us. A rude tone (like eat what we give or go). "we have only this". "can't do that". We were a group of 8 and we paid 4500Rs+ in a matter of 2 hours and it wasn't a peak hour or something (that floor was empty when we reached). Even with just business aspect, this wasn't bad at all. It averages 500+ Rs per person in madurai. There was utter lack of respect or courtesy. I didn't want to make a scene in front of my family and spoil the ambience, or I would have really confronted them right there. There was no reason to ill-treat your customer (forget about the respect aspect). Even the elderly server (one who brings food) was leaving the food at one corner of the table and we had to pass it on among ourselves. I 'asked' if they serve finger bowl (not that I 'need' finger bowl) and the response was, 'go to the wash basin' in a rude tone. There were other bearers who seemed neutral when they spoke to us. I'm not even asking for a lot of respect, but I dont think they deserve to treat us with disrespect. While we were always polite.
If Anjappar is any serious about the customers and references, they should take care of these behaviors. Gather feedback (not everyone writes a review). You don't want to hard work of many who work behind the scenes to go waste because people who are facing the customers are messing it up. On top of it, the food was not to Anjappar's...
Read moreWe are regular to this place. The interior and ambience of this place was good as usual, they are famous for chettinad foods. We ordered hot and sour chicken soup ( our all time favourite was too good but recently they have reduced the quantity ) , chicken biriyani( it was basmathi biriyani was good not up to the mark), egg shezwan noodles(the taste was yummy and quantity was super), allo parotta (taste fine but the stuffing was so meagre) , butter naan (soft and yummy but the prices were small), Kali mutton gravy ( taste like pereper mutton gravy it was good), prawn 65( taste crunchy and yummy), chicken tikka( tasted tangy and spicy when dipped in mint chutney ), special falooda ( taste good), elaneer payasam(this was so watery the taste was average ) , ❌❌📌📌basandhi ( it was worst the constituency was watery, the color was not perfect, the taste was not good worst experience) 📌📌❌❌and fuit jelly lovers ( fruit jelly was nice with jellies, fruits and 2 scoops...
Read moreDuring our 2 day trip in Madurai we landed here late at night around 10 looking for dinner options after our Mandir visit. We got seats after we had to mention twice that people coming after us got seats while we were kept waiting for what only they know. Anyways after that things were smooth, we ordered a bunch of authentic Chettinad items - Fried fish, Nalli Curry, Mutton Masala, Prawn fry along with Dal fry and steamed Rice. Gratefully the food was hot & fresh and also, served pretty quick. Portion sizes aren't too big, but prices are reasonable so it's fine, we had to order almost everything twice while the server taking our orders was getting very impatient and just waiting to close things down and lead us out. He wasn't too helpful with suggestions either, very rushed and reluctant is what we didn't appreciate. Overall, 4** because we were really happy with the food. Definitely would recommend, preferably when they aren't waiting to close...
