Nestled in Madurai near to Madurai temple Street, the New Sree Ram Mess stands as a testament to the adage "don't judge a book by its cover." While its exterior may not captivate at first glance, the treasures within unfold into a realm of pristine cleanliness and impeccable hygiene.
Stepping inside, one is greeted by a vegetarian feast that can only be described as a symphony of flavors. The culinary journey begins with chapparhi, accompanied by side dishes that include cabbage mutter in coconut milk and a tantalizingly spiced potato dry curry paired with a zesty lemon-mixed achar.
The succession of courses continues with rasam, Pappas, and the intriguingly inventive dry chilly condattom — a culinary creation born from drying curd-filled chilies. The ensemble includes a mixed vegetable curry, a sumptuous sambar, a roasted brinjal curry, and not one, but two types of hot and sour vegetable curries. A generous serving of curd adds a soothing touch to the feast.
Of noteworthy mention is the dal curry with a hint of ghee, a splendid prelude to the rice-based dishes. The symphony crescendos with a delightful dessert that brings a sweet harmony to the savory symposium. Each dish embodies authenticity and exudes aromatic allure, a testament to the kitchen's mastery.
Yet, the true heart of New Steeram Mess is its perpetually smiling staff, who gracefully navigate the orchestrated rush of serving a plethora of dishes during peak hours. Their unwavering enthusiasm and warmth make every dining experience a pleasure, even in the midst of haste.
Operating for decades, the hotel retains its authenticity, an anchor of tradition in a swiftly changing world. The street outside might bustle with activity, but it remains impeccably clean. Admittedly, space constraints and the absence of spacious restrooms might present inconveniences, but these fade into insignificance after indulging in the feast.
For those journeying to Madurai, a visit to this vegetarian haven is nothing short of a gastronomic pilgrimage. A heartiest recommendation echoes through these words, for a meal at New Sree Ram Mess is an experience that lingers as a delightful memory long after the last...

The normal lunch at the ground floor is priced Rs 130/ and the spl lunch is priced at Rs 170/, where one will get a chapathi, sweeet, and a payasam as additions and the hall is air conditioned. This mess has been there for more than 2 decades and they continue to maintain the same quality and keep their regular customers visit again and again. Food is served on the plaintain leaf (thala vaazha elai). Bottled water is available as option. However, hot water is provided on request. The lunch menu consists of chapathi, kurma, rice, sambar, mohr kuzhambu, khara kuzhambhu, khootu, poriyal, rasam, pappad. Display that only one cup of payasam will be served is distinctly exhibited on every table. The taste of food was very good. Sambar and rasam tasted nice. The family and friends in our group enjoyed the lunch. The restaurant met our expectations and did not fail us for the trouble taken to locate it. Will visit again in case I...
Read moreWe were a group of six people dining at this hotel, and our experience was truly disappointing. Since it was getting too late for us to catch our train, we specifically ordered one item as a parcel to take away in a hurry. To our shock, the staff insisted that we had already eaten the item and refused to give us the parcel, despite our repeated explanations about being in a rush.It was only after insisting they check the CCTV footage that the management realized their mistake. Even after confirming their error, not a single word of apology was offered for the way we were treated. Instead, the owner merely attempted to refund the money, which we refused, as this was not about the money but about respect and fairness.Such treatment is unacceptable, especially for guests who clearly explained their urgent situation. We hope this feedback encourages the management to show more courtesy, responsibility, and professionalism towards all customers...
