Gupta Chat Centre is a typical Mumbai rags-to-riches success story. A guy starts peddling eatables on a small stall, graduates to a small shop and now finally to a double shop floor in the uber expensive Matunga East.
He had hordes of patrons then also as well as in the present day. Some innovations in the offerings have made him popular but I believe this place is bit overrated.
The vegetable market nearby is always bursting on the seams hence there is always a sizeable crowd at every eatery / restaurant in the vicinity, this place is no exception.
The menu on the wall is a laundry list of items in the chaat, sandwich and corn range, with as many variations one can imagine. Add a couple of juices to that list as well.
The house speciality is the Toast Sev Puri. A Sev Puri of 6 pieces complete with the chutney, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, Sev et al sandwich between two buttered and chutneyed slices of bread & toasted. Topped with a slather of butter and Sev. It's pretty decent but an innovative item nonetheless.
I also had a Pani Puri but it left a lot to be desired. The sweet chutney is more red than brown. Is it not supposed to contain tamarind and dates paste then how can it be red. The spicy green water was more tangy and extra spicy. If I want to have a Pani Puri, I'll cross the road and have it at New Pankaj who has perfected the recipe for both, the sweet chutney and spicy water. The right notes hit your taste buds and leave it craving for more.
I also had a Dahi Ragda Pattice. It was topped with way too much fresh coriander. I may sport a goatee but I'm no goat to eat so much greens. Please spare me the greens. First 2 spoons went in finishing the greens, then came the curd which was not thick enough, then came the bland ragda and finely chopped onions. The flavor of any chat item is derived mainly from its sweet and spicy chutney, if you get it wrong then every item goes for a toss. They have got that important factor wrong.
Service is pretty slow at times. They have a coupon system, where you pay first and then get your order. Now when you have this system, you need a permanent person to man the counter. The person stationed here is always used as a spare labour, 2 persons are always busy making sandwiches, thereby leaving customers waiting and frustrated to get their order. I have waited for the Toast Sev Puri for a good 20 minutes.
If you always have home delivery or bulk orders, then why not have extra help. To add to it, they are not even apologetic about the delay. As if you have to pay to eat; waiting is a part of it, so what's the big deal.
It can be a one visit place, I...
Read moreDisrespectful, overhyped and overpriced. A place with bad vibes and bad behaviour, there are so many reasons as to why they lost so many loyal customers, including me. On my recent visit I experienced both the arrogance and the average quality of pani puri and dahi puri here. The thing I dislike the most about this place apart from the average food is that they have started treating customers disrespectfully. Here they allot food coupons after you pay for the dish, it's a standard practice in many places now but what differentiates this place is that here they show an attitude as if they are doing the customer a favour by giving the coupon! I experienced the arrogance first hand. This point is especially for the cashier, who will probably single handedly make you feel unwelcome. You will see many pictures of less known celebrities, most of them are small time tv news reporters or side artists from 7 years ago on the wall which they proudly display but it's from 7 years ago! This proves the fact that it has gone downhill since then. The second point I hate is that they do not accept cashless payments! No Google Pay, no Paytm etc. You will find everything overpriced here by 35 percent to 40 percent than what it usually costs, which may make you feel cheated at times but one can survive the overpriced dishes with a prescription from the gastroenterologist later however one cannot digest the rude behaviour of the staff. I wish they treated customers with respect. Anyways coming back to the regressive payment option, maybe they'll start it once they read this review. Anyways I will never be visiting this...
