Modern lunch home is an excellent restaurant especially for seafood lovers. This review is my dedication to my favorite restaurant since 2016 and the restaurant from where I order literally 20-25 times in a year.

So Modern lunch home specialized in Manglorean cuisine. I am writing this specific review to describe my favorite dish here. I rarely order anything else apart from this dish. Surmai Chilli refers to a preparation in Managlore called Pulimunchi which is a spicy thick curry. So the Surmai Chilli Thali contains the following: Surmai Medium Size Piece with Pulimunchi curry poured over it, extra thin gravy approx 300 ml, rice, 3 chapatis (you can replace this with roti or pay extra and upgrade to Neer Dosa), Veg. Sabzi, Papad & Solkadi. This meal is sufficient for my lunch & dinner. They give fairly big Surmai Piece; the pulimunchi curry is just out of the world and I crave for this curry very very often. The Chapatis are super soft, big in size and the combination of Chapati and Surmai Pulimunchi is a match made in heaven. Veg Sabzi changes each day and I have always loved whatever they have provided. I usually save half my Surmai Pulimunchi and eat it with rice and I also add thin gravy to the rice to make the best combination in the world. The taste of this dish stays on my mind for days and it makes me order again and again. Even their Solkadi is very flavoursome and it is a soothing digestive drink.

I have tried around 30 Seafood Thali restaurants in the entire city but this Surmai Chilli Thali to this date remains undefeated.

Please visit or order this Thali and you can order same Pulimunchi gravy in other seafood or in Chicken also. Thank you to the Chef at Modern Lunch Home for cooking such soulful food every single time. The food made here always fills my heart.

I found a similar place in kala ghoda with similar pricing called amrapali . For better understanding let me pick a dish from this two restaurant and compare :

1. 380 for tandoori chicken full in amrapali which is in kalaghoda area and also serves alcohol ( surprising enough this is also decently priced) Full tandoori chicken which comes in same 8 pieces in modern lunch home at same price . 2)amrapali is ac where I am paying 380. This is non ac and still we are paying 380-390 ( 5-10 rs higher )
2. cooking quality of tandoori chicken of modern lunch home is completely charred whereas in amrapali it is soft and non charred .
3. the restaurant doesn't seem that hygienic
4. in taste texture quality the kalaghoda wala restaurant surpasses this modern lunch home

Technically i am baffled at the fact that this restaurant being located in sion koliwada in close proximity of dharavi bazar ( one of the dirtiest area of the city ) is still charging same price as amrapali restaurant located in a posh area like kalaghoda . The only UsP of this restaurant or why the two three nonveg restaurants here is doing business is solely because they sell non veg food in close proximity to a veg dominated area

Prices are unreasonable and are not at par with the environment or quality of service or food that we get.

I discovered Modern Lunch Home quite by chance, surfing through a food app two years ago. So on my way back one afternoon from a conference, I took my chances and dropped in at a late lunch. I had reached nearly at the end of lunch hour, when the crowds were at their most dense; consequently, I was obliged to wait outside the restaurant, upon a hot footpath, for about 10 minutes before I was ushered in. Thereafter, I've not looked back; and whenever chance presents the opportunity, I visit.

The food here is fresh; it is obviously made from the best ingredients possible; it is served hot. The staff is courteous and brisk - a delicate balance surely; the interiors are functional and clean; though the dining area is not air conditioned, a number of fans and opened windows ensure airiness all the way to the interiors of this restaurant. The service tends to be quick; and efficient. Not 7 minutes pass between order and delivery.

I believe that this is one of the best restaurants of its class. I've spent delightful occasions here, alone, or with my family; and we've loved whatever...
