After a gruelling meeting on a Saturday afternoon, we were in no mood for lunch but were hungry nonetheless. Driving through the lanes of Sahar Road, Andheri, we reached Hanuman Road, Vile Parle East.
I spotted Panshikar - the favourite joint of my ex-Boss. We used to frequent this place quite often some years ago. But it had changed now, the logo was in English, it used to be in Marathi then. They call it TASTEAURANT now. The decor and ambience is nice and bright. To find a place to sit is still a struggle here as it was then, speaks of its popularity. The dining area is very small.
We had thought of skipping a heavy lunch but ate here like we hadn't eaten in days. We ordered Thalipith, Kothimbir Wadi, Misal, Puri Bhaji [with Rajgira Puri], Sabudana Khichdi, Batata Wada, Potato Toast, and Masale Bhath. It was accompanied by Panhe [a refreshing drink made out of Raw Mangoes], Piyush [a sweetened thick drink made out of dahi] and Kokam Sherbet.
A special mention of the chutney which is served here, it is typical Brahmin-style chutney, made out of grated coconut, fresh coriander and groundnuts. The groundnuts give a special taste to the chutney and its bits and pieces remind you of their presence. It is served with almost all dishes. The Thalipith is served is white butter which melts slowly over the hot Thalipith, the taste is just divine. Masale Bhath is a Maharashtrian speciality in Rice preparation and is MUST-HAVE from this menu.
After consuming almost everything on the menu, we were not feeling heavy and our wallets were lighter by Rs.850 for 8 people.
This place is a MUST VISIT if you want to try the Maharashtrian fare. Quality and Value for Money is assured but you may have to wait to find a place to sit.
Thank you PANSHIKAR'S for rekindling the taste buds and evoking memories of...

Read morePanshikar is known as a Maharashtrian restaurant serving authentic dishes like Misal Pav, Vada Pav, Thalipeeth, Piyush, and more. On a recent visit with my friend, we ordered Corn Patties and Batata Vada.
Service: The service was impressively fast, but there was initial confusion since both corn patties and batata vada looked very similar. The batata vada was served with garlic chutney (red) and white chutney. Having grown up eating vada pav and batata vada, I found the white chutney unusual.
The corn patties were also served with white chutney. Taste-wise, they were good—until we encountered a serious issue.
Serious Concern: While eating the corn patty, my friend found a stone inside. We immediately complained to the waiter, but to our surprise, he dismissed it casually, saying that stones in corn patties are common and can happen.
We were shocked by this response. It was extremely disappointing to see a lack of seriousness regarding food safety. We spoke to the owner afterward, and while we were not charged for the corn patties, the experience left a bad impression.
Final Thoughts: While the food tasted good, basic food hygiene and safety must be prioritized. I strongly urge the management and kitchen staff to thoroughly inspect ingredients and ensure proper preparation to avoid such incidents in the future. Ignoring such issues could lead to loss of...
