Summary This restaurant is a classic that is conveniently situated and easy to find. The food is good and the Chicken Rottiserie is great. I would recommend this restaurant for the delicious food and reasonable price. I wouldn’t recommend asking for recommendations from the assistants at the restaurant as they seem to not know very well the food and how they taste unless you are already familiar or can take spicy food.
Location It is located in the corner of a T Intersection and about 10 minutes drive from the Pune Train Junction. It is also not far away from the popular Kayani Bakery which is about 10 minute walk. This place is nicely situated and easy to find.
They only have a space for 2-3 cars and lots of space for motorbikes as you can see in the pictures. The area seems to be busy with lots of traffic passing through so getting to and from by taxi wouldn’t be a problem.
The Place We arrived at 12pm just before the crowd or diners came. This place seems to be popular among the locals. The place seems to have 2 sections when you come in and feels a but different one each side. The right side seems to have more wood and the left side seems to have more metal used as their tables and chairs. We chose the right side. This place is not for the instagrammers or social media fanatics. I felt I was in a legacy or ancestral restaurant that stood the test of time. You can feel and see that the place is dated. You come here because of the food and feel nostalgic.
Food and experience We heard the food was great and also because it was close to Kayani bakery, so we came to eat. There was someone who assisted us when we were ordering so that was nice, I think this is common in restaurants here.
We asked for recommendations, their specialty and also food that’s not spicy so kids can eat. The guy assisting us seem to have difficulty in suggesting and pointed out a few that were delicious but low to medium spicy that kids can eat. He also recommended the chef signature appetizer called Chicken Rottiserie which he said was definitely not spicy.
We took his advice and ordered the Chicken Rottiserie, Tandoori Chicken, Chicken Kebab.
Spoiler: they were all spicy. The Chicken Rottisserie was anazing, and the 2 other dishes were just ok.
The shake we ordered were not cold at all and I asked for ice they said they didnt have it and I asked another person for ice and they had it.
We waited a few minutes maybe 10, for the dish to arrive and the guy assisting asked if we wanted the food to be served as they are now ready. At this time my wife was not in the table with as as she went to Kayani to order some baked goods. I told the guy to serve the food anyway but the food didnt arrive for after waiting for 10 minutes so I asked the guy again if the food can be served as we were hungry. Finally the food arrived after another 5 minutes.
My kids were having a hard time eating as the food were spicy for them and I was also feeling the spice but as I am used to it, I was able to handle the heat. Fortunately, we had some extra omelette with us so the kids eat those.
I told the guy that the food he recommended that he told me was not spicy were actually spicy even for me, he got confused, turned around and walked away. Another person assisted...
Read moreA restaurant known for its biryani, as well as Parsi and Irani cuisine. In colonial times, the Cantonment area (now known as Camp) in Pune was mostly home to Christian, Parsi, and Muslim populations. The Parsis were in the good books of the British as they had oil contracts in Iran. However, due to a lack of employment opportunities, they could not get jobs in the service industry. The restaurant business became the preferred option as tea, bun maska (buttered bun), and bakery goods were a favourite among all, and the British gave Parsis the funds as well as the permission to open restaurants. One of these was George Restaurant on East Street, started in 1936 by Hassan Jafari. After his death, his son-in-law, Mansoor Aryaei , took over the business. It is currently owned by Reza Aryaei , Mansoor’s son. George started off with items such as mutton biryani, mutton masala with rotis, lamb chops, and steaks. While the mutton biryani remains a favourite, the lamb chops and steaks were discontinued due to unfavourable sales. The restaurant also serves Parsi food such as dhansak (a lentil-based meat curry) and patra ni macchi (a steamed fish dish). However, none of these have become as popular as their biryani, which is served in mutton, chicken, fish, prawn, and vegetarian variants. George makes its own garam masala (blend of spices) for the biryani, which is cooked in a handi (deep, wide-mouthed cooking vessel). The biryani recipe has remained unchanged over the years, and Aryaei says that you know the biryani is cooked to perfection when the aroma after lifting the handi’s lid makes you hungry. Apart from biryani, the chicken rotisserie, a variety of tandoori chicken (chicken prepared in an open oven), and butter chicken are also well known. The former is available only in the evenings. The Persian dishes—chelo kebab (grilled minced lamb served with rice) and jujeh kebab (grilled marinated chicken served with rice)—are also much-loved favourites. The chelo kebab is available only on Mondays and Thursdays, and a chicken variant, chelo murg, is served only on Wednesdays and Fridays. George has remained at the same location since it began. A fire in 1980 caused a year-long hiatus but the restaurant was reopened with a larger seating area that can accommodate 230 guests. George has two seating areas: a large ground floor dining area and an air-conditioned area that has specific times for service. George is almost always packed with patrons, so one may need to wait before being seated. Parking is a challenge: you can park at the pay-and-park on East Street or MG Road and walk to the restaurant. George also offers takeaway orders and delivers through Swiggy and Zomato. The restaurant fills the stomachs of not only its patrons but also those in need, since it donates all its leftover food to...
