"Mastani" — A Triumph of Hype over Taste

The beverage Mastani from Pune has been made popular for no good reason—other than borrowing the historical name "Mastani." Puneites have a tendency to glorify things and place them on a pedestal, sometimes undeservedly.

Take Kolhapuri misal for instance. No hotelier in Pune has ever been able to replicate its authenticity. Still, they keep modifying it slightly, branding it with new names, and continue making business out of it. If nothing else, at least the so-called Mastani could have delivered on taste—but even that is often disappointing.

Puneites seems to be obsessed with proving how different or superior they are compared to others, and this tendency is reflected in how they hype certain things. I remember having Sujata Mastani long ago, and I wasn’t too impressed back then either. But the buzz around it has only grown over the years.

So after nearly 20 years, I decided to try Gujar Mastani, just to see what the fuss was all about. But honestly, after the very first sip, I regretted the decision. It was outright terrible. The milk was too watery. The ice cream had icy chunks in it, with a bland and unimpressive taste. It wasn’t even worthy of a mouth rinse, let alone drinking.

Now, I don’t even feel like taking that road again where this shop is located. This so-called Mastani is nothing but a glittering illusion—and Pune gets to enjoy that misfortune as a blessing in disguise.

Glorifying what merely has a name is like throwing stones at your own...

They called them self as Mastani specialist and I would like to suggest that they should improve their taste. Too thin Mastani even if you compared to local shops. They do have huge varieties but none had good taste.

We ordered 10 different Mastani and asked their staff to note down but showed attitude and said I know what are your orders and left our table. At end he mixed 2 mastani and asked to keep it and have to go down for 3 times to get our complete order.

I feel it is overpriced for what they serves to customer. They might be charging for the venue location.

Place is not so big. Situated on highway and at corner so good Venue. Ambience is average.

one of the best mastani in pune city, not just like an thick milkshake and ice cream on top, these people really respect there work and keep the place clean , mastani is very classic and delicious, fresh ice-cream, not much preserved as others, try out bajirao mastani for 60 rupees almost an dollar , thats and nice piece and meaning of an taste. kulfies are wonderfully serve, seating arrangements are great, outdoor chairs are available and its an duplex sittings for customers but does not accept any card or any phone or online transactions, these people also have some parking space for bikes which is exactly touch to the main road, check out the prices of mastani and other drinks and ice cream i posted below.
