Precise rating: 3.7
Where: Sushi in a box, Teynampet
The place is on the main road, at 1st floor with staircase access; just above Absolute Thai and beside Café de Paris.
The place was cozy with 2 types of seating- with normal tables/Chairs as well as sitting on floor around the eating table, similar to Japanese style.
We took the normal sitting option. The place was spacious and not so crowded.
Service - 3/5
Communication was a herculean task here as the staffs were not that comfortable with English. They just vanish immediately taking the orders. So if you want to place further order or have any enquiries, you need to hold on till you spot them again. It was almost like playing Hide and Seek; they need to improve on this aspect if they are interested to up their game. The dishes were brought pretty quickly and their presentation was spot on.
Food – 4/5
Item 1 : Seafood Yasai Itame
Actual Description: The dish had stir fried vegetables(mostly napa cabbage, onions, mushrooms with prawns, squid and octopus. The dish was spicy , perfectly balanced and screamed of sea food flavor, which we thoroughly enjoyed.
Item 2 : Tobiko Gunkan
Actual Description: The dish had 2 fish Roe topped on vinegared Sushi rice wrapped with Seaweed; accompanied with pickled ginger & wasabi paste. When you bite into it, it’s almost like hundreds of small balls popping in your mouth, they had a slight salty taste to it.
Item 3 : Fish Katsu Actual Description: The dish had crumb fried fish cutlets chopped up into strip like pieces and served along with some veggies and a dip. It has no spice element if you are a spice lover, but otherwise enjoyable.
Item 4 : Sushi in a box Chisai
Actual Description: This is almost like a sushi platter where 2 pieces of salmon nagiri, tuna nagiri, prawns nagiri , 4 pieces of some maki type and a pair of white fish nagiri which I don’t recollect the name sadly. This is the best if you want to try out different flavours and in the process of getting used to sushis.
Sushi in a box Naka and Sushi in a box Kyodai have the same concept but the number of pieces per variety and the type of Nagiri changes but these are all platter types which you could opt if in a group or if you want to explore multiple options.
They also serve Kimchi and radish pickle and are not a part of the order. The kimchi here was too spicy and relatively fresh and complimented the dishes that we ordered. Jasmine tea is also unlimited.
Final Take: Almost all the dishes were pricy, however I found that the prices in almost all the restaurants serving sushis were around the same price. Also I have been wanting to these dishes so badly , it was really a beautiful experience in itself.
For those who are wondering what is sushi and how it taste like, here you go. Sushi is basically vinegared rice often prepared with seafood or veggies. So the taste is going to be that of the raw fish along with bite sized rice which may or maynot be accompanied with sea weed sheets based on the type of sushi you have selected. The wasabi is going to give a harsh hot burn with pungency and you place this paste on top of the fish slab. The entire piece of sushi would be lightly dipped(not drenched) in soy sauce which will give a slight salty flavor. So no way would it be spicy like our typical Indian dishes.
If you are a spice lover or not so much into sea food or if the sea food smell turns you off, I might suggest you think twice before you decide...
Read moreI was hyped to try this place out as my sister recommended it. She had previously visited it with her Japanese senseis while taking a course on the language. After having heard so much about okonomiyaki for so long, I had practically begun to crave it.
Finding the place wasn't easy. It's located inside the building that also has Cafe de Paris to the right. We parked there and made our way through. As soon as we entered, we were hit with a very strong smell of lemongrass (airfreshener?). It was so strong almost as if it was masking something else. I went with my parents and they rarely ever eat out and my mum voluntarily put the mask on though the mask mandate was withdrawn. Absolute Thai is also a unit of this restaurant. So, we ordered some Thai for my parents and the Thai soups were made of coconut milk and were creamy and delicious. The main course was Massaman curry and rice which was also pretty tasty but with an off rice to curry ratio(lesser rice and lots of curry). We tried lotus stem chips and I enjoyed it as always but my parents did not.
We ordered Japanese food. The much anticipated okonomiyaki was more omeletty than I expected. I didn't see any bonito flakes on it and though tasty, didn't feel authentic. My sister also commented that it did not taste this way in the past. The main course was a fish steak set which came with salad(made of fried noodles), kimchi, fish steak and vegetables served in a typical sizzler platter, tofu miso soup. The soup was light and something everyone enjoyed. The noodle salad was also good. Kimchi on the other hand was consumed and finished only by me. No one else went beyond tasting it which is a pity because I quite liked it. The fish steak though was made in a western style batter form which isn't my favourite way to have fish. It was still tasty and properly cooked. The shrimp tempura was also ordered and was apparently delicious and made with coconut shaving as well. I'm allergic and can only tell what I heard.
For dessert we had fried ice cream which was chef's kiss. Loved it and it got over immediately. Also had some drinks that were really good.
Initially the service wasn't as expected as the person seemed reluctant to change the plates but they did(after using them once). And then onwards it went smoothly.
The three stars were mainly due to the intense smell. It was uncomfortable to stay in the strong smell but it decreased by the time we were ready to leave. Please take your elderly into this restaurant at your own discretion. My parents did not enjoy it as...
Read moreI recently dined at Sushi in a Box, and I must say, the experience was delightful. The restaurant offers a cozy and inviting atmosphere, perfect for both casual and special occasions. Here are my thoughts on the standout dishes I tried:
Beef Yasaiitame The Beef Yasaiitame was a flavorful stir-fry dish that exceeded my expectations. The beef was tender and well-marinated, blending seamlessly with the crisp, fresh vegetables. The sauce was savory with a hint of sweetness, perfectly complementing the ingredients without overwhelming them. This dish is a must-try for anyone looking for a hearty yet healthy option.
Chicken Ramen Next, I sampled the Chicken Ramen, which was a comforting bowl of goodness. The broth was rich and deeply flavorful, indicative of a long, slow simmering process. The chicken was succulent and plentiful, adding to the heartiness of the dish. The noodles were perfectly cooked, maintaining the right balance of firmness and chewiness. This ramen offered a perfect balance of flavors and textures, making it an ideal choice for ramen enthusiasts.
Tenderloin Bao The Tenderloin Bao was an absolute treat. The bao buns were soft and fluffy, providing the perfect vessel for the tender, juicy beef tenderloin inside. The meat was cooked to perfection, with a beautiful balance of seasoning that enhanced its natural flavors. Accompanied by a fresh, tangy slaw and a touch of spicy mayo, each bite was a burst of deliciousness. This dish is a fantastic choice for those looking for a savory snack or a light meal.
Salmon Sushi Finally, I couldn't resist trying the Salmon Sushi, and it did not disappoint. The sushi was impeccably fresh, with the salmon having a melt-in-your-mouth quality. The rice was seasoned just right, holding together well without being too sticky. Each piece was a perfect bite of delicate, clean flavors, showcasing the high quality of ingredients used. This sushi is a testament to the restaurant's dedication to excellence in Japanese cuisine.
Overall, Sushi in a Box impressed me with its excellent service, warm ambiance, and, most importantly, its delicious food. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared and presented, making for a memorable dining experience. I highly recommend visiting Sushi in a Box to enjoy their diverse and...
