It was an odd experience. It's one of those places you'd expect to have a good time and good food. Strangely that wasn't the case. Firstly, we learn that their cafe menu - which had crepes, croissants, pancakes, muffins, waffles, burgers, pizzas that we wanted etc... - is only available post 3 pm. While I wouldn't mind having Muffins & croissants anytime of the day, I wouldn't think to have them in the evenings.
I also would presume that a cafe would function throughout the day and not break service on account of lunch; I failed to check if they'd do the same on account of dinner too, cause if that's the case then they're only a cafe for 3-4 hours of the day, but come on. Whatever be it, they should have informed me when I called for a table, and mention in Zomato, and other platforms they're on. How are new customers to know?
I would assume a French café to have croissants and puff pastries on display ready to serve, but there was not a single offering of such.
Funnily, they also didn't have just the things we wanted. They denied us pizzas cause of time, we wanted to try the camembert cheese puff which was unavailable, also the mini dessert platter... The key lime pie we had instead was too sweet, we could feel the granulated sugar not fully mixed with the custard.
Thankfully they had the three cheese soufflé we wanted, it was richly delicious, and meant to be shared. The onion tart tartain we had instead of the puff, was also very good. But unlike the soufflé, this one if hardly enough for one. The truffle oil mushroom paté was unimpressive. We also ordered a fish tikka, which was well done though the produce was not fresh.
Since we wanted to have a pizza, we waited till 3 pm to have one, and it was abysmal to say the least. The pizza is hardly the size of a small plate, the tomato base was off colour & palatably stale, and we were literally the first ones to order it.
Like I said, it was just off; the whole experience. It's a nice café, pretty premises, a few french dishes on the menu, but it is NOT a French café. Thinking it is was the biggest let...

The restaurant stands its name with great looking French interiors and amazing French ambiance
The warm welcoming staff are well trained and multilingual (it would have been nice if they would have welcomed in French with a nice "bonjo " What the heck even the small 2ftx3ft toilet on the second floor shouts out French ...
Definitely One of the best places in Coimbatore to take your special one out for a date...
BUT ........ But.... It just falls short of five stars on its shoulders... just because of its
just OK taste of food
But ya that valid if you get time to divert your minds off the romantic atmosphere and Imaginary French wine (sadly non-alcoholic)
Pros Great staff. Awesome romantic atmosphere Great decor and interiors Well maintained and clean toilets Decent choice of French food dishes Appropriate prices (despite seemingly expensive)
Cons
The food
Seriously the food dose not do justice to the place
Again if I must say the only con I found is the food The food dose not taste as good as the ambiance Nor is the presentation of the food is that great Now come on just ask your chef to watch a single episode of master chef and he or she might perform better
The food please improve the food.
And above all This place desperately needs a liquor license A good range of French wine or a few choices of champagne will add wonders to this place It will be nice if you can train the greeting staff with few words in French.
Overall I will definitely come back again and will definitely recommend few friends to visit
Simply and simply because of the ambiance of this small joint right across the mint green " French door"
PS : the food please improve the food . I would love to...
Read moreWe tried The French Door a few days back. And 💯💯💯💯 will go back for sure.
The food was SO GOOD we forgot to take pics of all the dishes. 🙈
We ordered - Mangalorean buns (set of 3 buns made from banana batter with spicy coconut chutney. Buns were super fluffy. They had a very interesting flavour. Savoury with hints of sweet notes. 5/5 will reorder.)
Chilly paneer bao (the only dish we didn’t enjoy. Bao filling was too sweet and under seasoned. Bao base was bland and dry. 2/5 - Will not reorder.)
Farm fresh pizza (perfect crust, perfect amount of cheese and toppings. Absolutely loved it. 5/5)
Penne Alfredo (omg fav dish - melt in your mouth - perfect blend of spices and cheese. Great pasta to sauce to veggies ratio. 10/5 - lol loved it that much)
Paneer tikka pizza (one of the best pizzas I have eaten in Coimbatore. Stringy hot cheese, superb sauce taste and good amount of toppings. 5/5)
Special note for the amazing service. Mr. Ganesh is very hospitable. Helped us choose our dishes to avoid repetitive tastes.
What really impressed me was our waiter. I always drink only hot water at restaurants. Normally I have to keep asking for a refill and I have to keep reminding them that I like really hot water. But here, at French Door, the waiter would approach our table periodically and ask to fill my water himself at the perfect temperature. I didn’t have to ask them even once for a refill. Very impressive.
Hotel owners might think this is silly. But please do understand that for a lot of people food is only 50% of the experience and service is remaining 50%.
We will 100% go back to French Door without even...
