We were definitely excited to be at the Fifth! Happening for it's trending instagram reels and for the grills that are available over the weekends. So we booked a table at 7pm on Sunday night. We started with the Mocktails. 1) Cafe Cola - Amazing, apt to its description - smoked, well balanced with coffee and cola with a tad of orange zing! 2) Kaffir pineapple and tender coconut - A refreshing light and smooth drink perfectly made. Appetizers - 1) Avacado Thokku - An interesting combination of Guacamole and a light foam of cream cheese flavoured with very mild truffle oil. (Could be a Lil more generous with the truffle) The crakers were crisp and generously coated with gunpowder! 2) The Pork brisket Tacos - they were insanely good! Fresh, meaty and juicy! Loved the crispy bacon bits on it. 3) Mains - Wagyu - Medium Rare - Served with the house Jus and Chimichuri. Good quality steak well made. The Jus and Chimichuri just didn't work for me. Both lacked authenticity and flavour. The mashed potato was great! 2) Japanese fried rice with Prawns, ham and bacon - So So. Lacked seasoning. Could have been made better. The service was good by Mani. He attended to our table. Thank you Mani. However there were a few hiccups which were overlooked by the restaurant I'd say.. like we were seated at a round table for two.. the grill platter (steak) board was bigger than the sides of the table. Making it uncomfortable to have a meal. We were told that the Wagyu would take 25mins to be served. Our drinks, appetizers, and the mains were served almost all together at once on our table which I honestly feel it was rushed on us. I would have appreciated if we were intimidated on the food flow.. I was only taken back at the end of our meal.. we had enjoyed our evening.. we had paid for the cheque. We were seated for barely 2mins after we had paid and I was still sipping on my drink.. while we were politely asked to leave as they wanted a table for two.. inspite of the restaurant being vacant with multiple tables. This I felt...

Read moreTheir system of reservation is efficient and they called us a few hours before our reservation to reconfirm and also tell us about last orders being at 2:30pm. They also warned us that the pool/beach facing table we had opted for, would have direct sunlight. It was a major issue, but that is on us, as we chose it in spite of the warning during reservation.
Food is not bad. Some dishes are better than others - mango chunda with brie and tacos were decent, chilli cauliflower was nice as well. Portions are small so more than four people in a group would need two portions even if they were ordering one starter per person. Grills were not available for lunch. Things like tater tots chaat was an unnecessary innovation as the product was worse that aloo tikki chaat or ragda patties.
For mains we ordered a huge variety. Chicken safed maas was the standout with really nice smokey flavour. The champaran style nalli was a con - it was a mediocre dish in some onion-tomato gravy, something that a restaurant using typical 'chop masala' (readymade gravy in North Indian restaurants) could easily do. The prawn mappas curry and snapper laksa were also a big letdown - Chennai does not have a great food scene, but even here these two dishes are available at far better standard.
The valrohna cake was nice. Deconstructed mousse was pointless innovation making it worse than a regular mousse (story about many of their dishes including their shahi tukda). old monk gulab jamun was a good take with the run taking the edge of the gulab jamun. sweetness.
