We had been to this restaurant last week with 7 members for Lunch on a Sunday around 2 PM. Although the place was crowded we did get a table quickly and settled down. We had ordered for Non veg Thali and Biriyani. The Thali hardly had any side dish except for some fish and mutton gravy and curd. There was only one veg side dish and that too Yam.

There were no pappads or any other accompaniments served. The taste of the food was okay but the quantity served for the price was very very low. I think the owners have to give it a fresh thought as we had been there earlier too where we didn't feel ripped at the end of our meal. Mutton Sukka which was an ala carte order costed us a bomb for the quantity served. Likewise be it fish or any other additional dishes ordered were over priced for the quantity. We can see similar feedbacks on price vs quantity served from other customers as well in this platform. Owners please wake up!!

While we have been to this restaurant through word of mouth for its quality and quantity, this time we decided we will not go back again or recommend the restaurant to any else as it was a total rip off. Even goli soda which was served costed 3 times more than what was charged just outside in the Kiosk. We saw a lot of the guests coming out to have soda// ice creams as they costed heavily although it was being picked up from this kiosk just outside the restaurant. The outside waiting area sofas were all damaged and not properly maintained.

Overall a bad experience and no value...

I was there Yesterday 29th December 2021 for Lunch.

Ordered Mutton Biriyani, Nethli Fry, Lollypop Chicken and a Water bottle.

Mutton Biriyani had very less quantity and Rice was overcooked. Only two pieces of Mutton served. I dont call it as Mutton Biriyani at all Nethli Fry worst as I have ever had. Lot of salt on it and not fried properly and the fishes were big. Lollypop chicken was not Lollypop it was Fried chicken with some masala on it. Not able to taste them Ordered water bottle and they gave one litre Kinley. I asked them do you have half litre. Waiter said only 1 ltre and you can carry while going

Shocking: I went to wash hands and to come back to settle the check. Remember I did not order the bill which means they don't know my order is complete.

When I came back the table wss was cleaned and they started placing new leaf. They took my ordered water bottle as well. I asked them why did you remove all my stuff they just ask me to move as the next set of customers are waiting. Had a worst experience and dont recomment this restaurant for any if you want good customer service. Food is not tasty as well.

They don't know how to manage the crowd. Management is not performing well. I don't think this restaurant deserves even a single star but I cannot rate below one star. GOOGLE SHOULD PROVIDE NO STAR...

Fabulous Chettinad food !!!

Came here when i was on my business trips to chennai and went after over stuffing myself every time !!

#ambiance : 3.5 It may be hard for you to locate the first time but you will soon feel immersed into the south indian fine dining vibe. The music is from the MGR era and the place is filled with locals especially on lunch time. The serving is done on banana leaves

#service : 2.5 Its not the best service if you can't speak tamil. Its hard for waiters to understand and you can't even ask them how much portion will come with the meal or how is one dish different from another. They had to find a waiter who could understand a bit of english to take my orders. The food will come in fast and in large portions

#price : 4.5 Very well priced considering the large portions and awesome food

#food : 5 I may have never tasted home made chettinad cuisine but this comes close #steamed rice : it may sound foolish but you don't just get steamed rice. The rice comes with 7 other curries like a proper thali. Its mouth watering and spicy #chickenkalimirch : spicy and superb. the portions are enough for two people yet the taste was so good that i finished it all alone #biryani : Nice & spicy. Will fill you to the brim

Come here if you are in chennai for a short visit and would like to try the famous...

Amma Chettinadu Restaurant, a place I’ve not visited in the last 15 years or so. A few good lunch outings in 2006-2007 along with colleagues from Hexaware is what I remember about this place. Also remember hearing from a few people about how the owner of this restaurant was a celebrated chef in M.G.R’s home, and so on. Glad to see the restaurant doing as good, even today! This restaurant has always seen a great political patronage, and today was no different. On a weekday, the place was quite busy, and from the diner’s costumes, it didn’t take too long to make out they were from political circles. We were directed to the first floor which was relatively free. I only remember dining in their ground floor on my earlier visits. Immediately got seated and after a quick look at the menu, noticed that the prices definitely weren’t cheap. The reference or comparison to ‘cheap vs pricey’ is because one of my friends called this place Amma Mess, and by mess standards, it was certainly pricey. Most of the side-dishes were around 300 bucks. Anyways, in a non-vegetarian restaurant, it wasn’t bad, I thought. Ordered Non-vegetarian Meals for wifey, Egg Biryani for myself and Chicken 65 Biryani for my son. Vanjiram Fry, Prawns Roast and Boneless Pepper Chicken were the side orders. Food was served in reasonable time.

Amma Chettinadu Restaurant – Chennai This was my very first meal after touching down in Chennai, and I chose Amma Chettinadu after seeing several recommendations. I also asked some locals for suggestions before ordering. We went with 2 meals, Crab Masala, Chicken 65, Mutton Chukka, and Spanish Mackerel (Vanjaram Fish). The food was absolutely outstanding. The crab was incredibly fresh with plenty of meat, and the masala was perfectly balanced with spices. Chicken 65 was juicy and packed with flavor, while the mutton chukka was tender and easy to chew. The fried vanjaram fish was extremely fresh, and the marination allowed the natural taste of the fish to shine through. The restaurant is always busy and packed with customers, so do plan your timing accordingly. Prices are reasonable, leaning towards the medium to high range for Chennai. The only downside to my experience was the waiter forcefully demanding tips, which felt quite disrespectful – especially since I noticed this wasn’t done with locals. I believe tipping should always be voluntary and based on service, not pressured. I hope the management addresses this issue. Overall, the food quality was to die for, and I’d definitely return again despite the unpleasant tipping experience.

I visited this restaurant on a Saturday for lunch, and here’s my take on the meal. We ordered a mix of dishes: mutton biryani, chicken biryani, prawn roast, chicken 65, and pepper chicken fry. Biryani: Both the mutton and chicken biryanis were a bit disappointing in terms of flavor. While the pieces were tender and juicy, they lacked the punch I was hoping for. The biryanis felt like they were missing that perfect blend of spices. Prawn Roast: The prawn roast was just okay. Nothing particularly memorable, but not bad either. It could definitely use a bit more seasoning and depth of flavor. Chicken 65: This dish was very much a home-style preparation. It didn’t stand out as much, but still tasted decent. It didn’t quite live up to the hype I had heard about it. Pepper Chicken Fry: The highlight of the meal! The pepper chicken fry was absolutely delicious—flavorful, perfectly spiced, and juicy. It was the dish that made the experience enjoyable. Overall, the food was decent, but the restaurant should definitely pay more attention to the flavors, especially for the biryanis and prawn roast. Still, it was a good experience, and I’d be happy to visit again for the pepper chicken fry alone!
