Our good Indonesian friend and her husband invited us to have a dinner with them in a Japanese restaurant here in Bali. I must admit I was a little sceptic with eating in a local restaurant to start with. This is because when I was in Jakarta I could not find any food that I felt was safe, mainly being the fear of stomach complications. This is the reasoning why we have so far only stayed in trusted hotels so I could eat food in the hotel without fearing the risk of complications for my stomach.
We arrived to this Japanese restaurant early in the evening and we were very warmly welcomed at the door. Our table was already handsomely set up for us. We were also welcomed with a small and tasty appetizer before we were given the menu for both drinks and food. A waitress also told us what all the different dishes included.
The table was nicely setup. The restaurant was also very clean and sanitary.
We ordered different types of appetizers from the menu. Personally I ordered the scallops and the crab soup. All the appetizers were very tasty and they were also excellently presented.
For the main course it was also keeping up the same high standards and fabulous presentation as the appetizers had. Personally I was having the Wagyu teriyaki. It was excellently cooked and presented. I can also say the same thing about what the other guests were eating. All of them seemed to have enjoyed the food very much. All portions were served in a great quantity.
I can easily say this was the best meal I have ever eaten in Indonesia, in my opinion. I felt 100% safe to eat here. Therefore I can highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to have good quality meals without costing any unworthy amounts.
My only suggestion for the restaurant is to serve the beer in a glass bottle instead of in a can since beer from a glass bottle tastes better...
Read moreThe great reviews got us in. It was a complete letdown. It's like we went to a totally different place, or the 5 star reviews are really for ambiance and service, not the food.
Honest feedback- shared with our waiter who seems mostly disinterested, hence the reason I'm sharing it here.
Scallops not properly cooked. No sear. Also seemed to be cut in half. Reducing the size of the Scallops took away from the flavor and reduced the portion. Also could have used a bit more salt. Flavors were underwhelming.
Calamari. Flavor combination was good. Portion sizes much smaller than expected.
Tuna Tataka tastes as expected. Good color. Best appetizer.
Salmon belly. Poor flavor combination. Completely bland. Salmon seemed to be cooked and unseasoned. Did not taste like salmon.
Grouper. No sear. Not grilled. Fish (and skin) was soggy like it was baked. Also seemed like the filet was cut in half. Very thin. I travel to coastal areas frequently and have been eating grouper for over 30 years. This was by far the thinist piece I've ever had.
Ribeye steak. No sear. Broiled at best. No bite. Temperature was ok but no sear and no flavor so it was like chewing a ball of bland meat.
Also, the artful cooking experience that is teppanyaki falls short because the grill is not visible from the teppanyaki counter.
On the bright side, the service was excellent. Very nice and engaging people. Sadly, they need to invest in training for the cook. Hardworking but clueless about Japanese cuisine.
I understand the owner of Shichirin also owns Larasa Villas next door. We received a Larasa guest discount of 10%. Ironically the food at the Villa restaurant is much better and the service is exceptional. We actually returned to the villa restaurant for dessert and drinks...
Read moreWent yesterday for dinner and was frankly very disappointed with the experience. The staff were very friendly and the service was pretty good, that made an experience slightly tolerable. The atmosphere itself is okay, but far from high end restaurant which they clearly pretend to be. The food quality was poor even though the presentation was actually quite nice. We ordered the selection of sushi and it was honestly very very average, the fish quality was not the highest, tuna tataki and garlic rice was okayish as well but would never come back for it, can find many much better places around the island. We also ordered gyu katsu set and cubed wagyu and that was probably the WORSE MEAT I have had in my life, I could for sure taste more the fat that the meat itself, the smell and the taste was frankly horrible. The staff did advised us before that they use the local beef, but how low must have been the quality of that beef for it not to taste like beef at all. The staff was pretty helpful and exchanged it for salmon which was much better in comparison, but can’t say it was good. In the end they gave us a complimentary mango mousse, again great presentation but a full lack of flavour. They currently have an option of payment with the grabpay but they do insist that you must leave a positive review on grab in case you wish to use that option, which makes me think many reviews here are fake as well. Overall quite a bad experience, but the staff made it a...
