A Drastic Decline – Disappointing Experience at SHUN
Our visit to SHUN in July was nothing short of extraordinary—one of the most memorable dining experiences we’ve had anywhere in the world. The atmosphere, service, and food were impeccable, setting a standard that we couldn’t wait to experience again. Unfortunately, our recent visit in January was the complete opposite—disorganized, lackluster, and far from the high-caliber experience we once cherished.
From the moment we arrived, it was clear something was off. The restaurant was nearly empty, with an odd energy that felt completely different from before. Construction materials and rolled-up carpets were visible near the entrance, making the space feel unfinished. The music selection was strange and only improved toward the end of our meal.
While the waitstaff was kind and friendly, they seemed unfamiliar with the menu, struggled with service basics (such as replacing utensils promptly), and even forgot to serve a cocktail we ordered until we reminded them. The pacing was awkward, and details that once made SHUN special—such as the ice cream course—were missing entirely.
Most disappointing was the fact that we were charged the same price as our July visit, despite the stark decline in quality, service, and ambiance. If SHUN has been temporarily relocated or is undergoing changes, this should be transparently communicated, and the pricing should reflect the current experience. Instead, it felt like an imitation of the original, falling short in every way. At one point, we even joked that we were being “punked” because so much about the evening felt disjointed and off.
I truly hope this was an anomaly and not a permanent shift in SHUN’s identity. If you’re considering dining here, I would strongly recommend checking recent reviews or reaching out to the restaurant directly to confirm whether they’ve returned to their former excellence. Otherwise, you may find yourself paying a premium for an experience that no longer lives up to...
Read moreWe attended this omakase to try their 18-course experience, and it truly was a memorable evening.
When booking, you can choose between two seatings, at 6:30 pm or 8:30 pm.
From the moment we stepped inside, we were warmly welcomed by the managers and the head chef for the night. We were shown to our seats at the counter and offered drinks. Once everyone had arrived, the evening began with a refreshing welcome drink featuring yuzu (non-alcoholic), which set the tone perfectly.
The chef then introduced himself and explained how the experience would unfold. Over the course of the 18 dishes, we enjoyed sashimi, torched scallops, wagyu, and many other creative preparations. Several dishes were presented with flair — some with fire, others with dramatic touches of dry ice — making the experience as much a show as a meal.
The team worked seamlessly together, like a well-oiled machine, ensuring everything was timed and executed perfectly.
Dessert came with a personal touch: a beautifully plated birthday message for my wife, which made the evening even more special.
The atmosphere, quality of food, and service were all of a very high standard. Once the final course was served, the chef personally thanked the guests before leaving.
The only drawback was that as soon as desserts were served, the kitchen staff began washing equipment just a few metres away from the counter. This slightly disrupted the otherwise immersive atmosphere.
Overall, this omakase is a must-try for a special occasion or if you are looking for a fine dining experience. Just be mindful that the prices reflect the quality — it is not a...
