Take a moment to taste the legendary kopitiam based in old city of Medan, to be precise at the corner in front of Pasar Hindu. I love the vibe surrounding the kopitiam: old buildings, the market, various food stall, where you can see the people, the smell of fried kweetiau, and the busy street of jalan Hindu.
I am quite surprise since no signage showing it was the Kedai Kopi Apek. Not like the modern kopitiam, this modest kopitiam choose to maintain the authenticity. When I entered the plce then I realise the reputation if this place was so high. It was 9 am and fukl of people from different places or even nationalities sitting there. It took some time for me before one of the waitress help to find me a chair next to the window.
Based on the reviews, I choose Kopi O and Kaya Toast. I like the smell and taste of Sumatran coffee served here, probably from Aceh areas, and the sweet and savory of the bread with srikaya spreading.
Looking forward...
Read moreThis kedai kopi is absolutely overrated. The taste of coffee and food is standard, maybe even sub-par, to similar kedai kopi in Medan. The place is small and crowded with tourists. As someone born and grew up in Medan, I think this kedai rides the wave of online popularity too much and fails to keep the authentic experience. Their way overpriced coffee, tea and food stunned me. IDR 45K for two slices of roti bakar??
Price, place, taste, and ambience are supposed to combine to create an authentic experience, and this place just, in my opinion, got it wrong. Yes, if you want to take photos and geotag yourself to a hype place, please visit. But if you want a real kedai kopi, Medan has plenty to offer. Go...
Read moreGo there for their local coffee and kaya toast. Their kaya toast is a must! Their kaya is very different from those from chain stores like Ya Kun & Toast box from SG. It’s exactly the taste that I remembered since young back in Malacca. Local coffee is strong and flavourful! The most unique part is the boiled eggs. U can choose whether it have them 1/2 or 3/4 cooked. All in all, a pleasant surprise! The only drawback is the price. It’s more expensive than those chain stores in SG. NB: a small cup of kopi susu is Rp30k ~SGD2.4. Kaya toast is about Rp40k for one piece, cut into 4 pieces. We also ordered fried mee from outside. Tasty and filled...
