Warung Pengkola is an absolute gem that truly makes you feel like a local celebrity whenever you step inside. As a regular visitor, Wednesday nights for Reggae night have become a tradition for me, and the atmosphere never disappoints. The moment I walk in, the band welcomes me like an old friend, and their energy is contagious. On one memorable night, my knowledge of reggae lyrics led to an impromptu performance that made me feel like a star, and since then, I've been a regular performer at Warung Pengkola.
The band's passion for music is evident in every performance, and being able to explore a wide range of reggae songs with them has been an enriching experience. We've delved into the classics by Bob & Damian Marley and are currently experimenting with newer reggae tracks. I'm excited about the prospect of covering iconic artists like Burning Spear, Barrington Levy, Dennis Brown, and Freddie McGregor in the future, as these are some of my personal favorites.
When it comes to the culinary offerings at Warung Pengkola, the vegetarian options are nothing short of spectacular. While the elusive veggie burger remains a mystery to me due to its popularity, I have sampled almost everything else on the menu, and each dish has left me thoroughly impressed. The fried rice, noodles, curry, soup, and potatoes all deserve a perfect 10/10 rating for their flavors, freshness, and care put into their preparation.
The attention to detail in every aspect of the dining experience at Warung Pengkola is commendable. Each dish is a testament to the chef's expertise and commitment to quality, resulting in a consistently delightful meal every time. The flavors are authentic and robust, showcasing a perfect balance of spices and ingredients that cater to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. Additionally, the ambiance of the place, combined with the friendly staff and warm decor, creates a welcoming and inviting atmosphere that keeps me coming back for more.
In conclusion, Warung Pengkola is a true hidden gem that has captured my heart with its exceptional music, delectable vegetarian cuisine, and warm hospitality. It's more than just a bar or a restaurant—it's a place where locals and visitors alike can come together to enjoy good music, great food, and unforgettable memories. Whether you're a reggae enthusiast, a vegetarian food lover, or simply looking for a unique and vibrant experience, Warung Pengkola is a must-visit destination that promises to leave a lasting impression. Read moreThe Pengkola, in a beautiful old renovated Balinese property has kept much of its legacy architecture intact. The conical, high ceiling still has cane mats and wooden rafters. The old brick pillars and walls have been deliberately kept paint-free to gel with its old structure. The distressed chairs and tables further lend authenticity to its old-world charm. Its open sides with cane Venetian blinds, make it incredibly air and comfortable, and give clear view of the streets. It's great for people-watching and a 4 pints of Bintang for IDR 400K makes it a compelling restaurant to imbibe and while the time away. Popular Western pop music plays throughout the day on a superb sound system and there's live music every Saturday. It was breakfast time, so I ordered a fruit salad, a banana honey pancake and an iced americano. It's the best pancake I've had in Indonesia so far. It was sizeable, soft and the banana stuffing was just right. The fruit salad was a total surprise. Substantial and with fresh, crunchy mangoes, pineapple, purple dragonfruit and mangoes! Loved my time here. They've free wifi, so it was an excuse to linger after breakfast and just enjoy the ambience...
Read moreWasn't a fan of the food at all. The chili hot dog was too messy to eat, which normally wouldn't be a problem but there are no plates, just some square rectangle thing that holds the hot dog. Presentation was good though, taste was alright nothing special. The onion ring batter was super hard and over fried. Our dessert was fried iced cream and the batter tasted like the onion ring batter and was also hard and not enjoyable, practically no ice cream inside, just a ball of hardish batter. The saving grace was the waitress who was lovely and bubbly and super friendly. We liked her and the prices are great just the food can be...
