Warung Nasi Tim Baru Mangga Besar Central Jakarta December 2019
Nasi campur for 45 K IDR
Well, i really did just come across this place while walking towards Bakmi Cong Sim (a favourite of both my grandpa from my mother's side as well as my dad) and thought to myself "hmm, why not give a new place a try". I would argue that this is usually a good attitude to take, but one would be wise to ask what their specialty is (nasi tim ayam, fyi) and choose that rather than sticking with your own guns and ordering nasi campur just because you left the house looking for a specific thing in mind (namely pork).
So yeah this rendition was really just borderline okay for the price. The cha siu pork is actually quite flavourful, sadly it's not that juicy. Subsequently, the braised pork is also quite okay, but one would probably prefer a different taste and texture like a crunchy sio bak. They also gave the dish two pieces of their roast chicken which was less than stellar, so thank god for the pork satay which is actually nice and soft - albeit being a little sweet. Finally, its accompanying broth is actually quite fresh, not sour (like how most would make theirs with sayur asin), and comes with laden with nice fresh veg.
Luckily i also ordered some braised pork ears for 15 K IDR which is nice and tender. I am personally the type who prefers more of the soft bone, but if you like them meatier/fattier, this dish is really really worth the asking price. Subsequently, their pickled chili is also quite good and their homemade chili sauce is very refined.
All in all, it seems to be a regular haunt for those who were alive when it was actually new (baru) back in 1960, but maybe it's not really for others. However, if you're still adamant on trying it out, perhaps their nasi tim ayam really is that good. I also overhead others ordering their roast chicken and perhaps the burung tim obat will be good.
