Makan Place Legian Bali July 2019
Balinese Pork Tacos for 58 K IDR++
The Balinese pork itself was quite okay, and the lawar salad it came with is really crunchy and fresh. Even the sambal matah packs quite a punch. But i would really have liked the pork to be grilled again rather than pre-tossed with the cold salad. I would have also liked a lot more of the sambal matah to make up for the toned down spiciness of the meat and salad, but i guess they are aiming for a more Internasional clientele.
Luckily the bits of crunchy pork crackling was good enough to give it that extra layer of texture and flavour. Sadly the white tortillas were really bland and was disappointingly cold - they really should grill them tortillas as to provide a nice warm contrast with the cold salad. Finally, if corn tortillas are too much to ask for, then please get me some more mixed grain ones for some extra texture.
Subsequently, i came in for the happy hour (which is quite generous - 12.00-17.00 AND 21.00-22.30) and i found their selection of any 2 cocktails for 112 K IDR++ quite enticing. Sadly i was again disappointed by its lackluster presentation, lack of punch, and overall lack of character. The spiced island cocktail lacked the promised caramelized pineapple and the mango white sangria was even worse with even less quality alcohol, no complexity, and i bet they used mango juice out of a carton...
All in all, it's a great place to hang if you like the decor, vibe, and view BUT it is a bit overpriced for what it is and i would hate to have to pay full price for those cocktails. They do say that their pork knuckle is good, and a chef friend does recommend the same thing, but i guess that will have to wait for another blue moon.

If you're in Bali and looking for a place that combines authentic Indonesian flavors with a modern twist, Makan Place should be high on your list.
The setting is a perfect mix of tropical elegance and laid-back Bali vibes. The decor features earthy tones, traditional Balinese art, and plenty of greenery, creating a cozy yet sophisticated dining environment. It’s ideal for both casual lunches and romantic dinners.
We tried the Steak and BBQ pork ribs which were perfectly cooked with the right amount of seasoning. The flavors were just right. Drinks were also a highlight. We enjoyed some refreshing mocktails and cocktails, that goes well with our food.
The staff were warm, attentive, and genuinely passionate about the food. Service was prompt, and we never felt rushed, even during the lunch peak hours. It was my husband's birthday and the staff had arranged for a surprise for him. The birthday cake slice was beautifully presented and the staff even sang Happy Birthday for my husband. It turned out that it was a chocolate pudding cake which was so delicious. It was indeed a memorable day for us!
Prices are very reasonable, especially given the quality, portion sizes, and overall experience. Expect to spend a bit more than you would at a local warung, but it’s well worth it for the quality and ambiance.
We will definitely be back again to try their other local food items on the menu...
Read moreCame here mid afternoon on a sunny day while everyone was nearby at the beach, so it was quiet the whole time I was here with just a few other tables seated in their huge, beautiful space. I had just been getting over a bad stomach virus over the previous days, so I was initially drawn to their chicken wonton soup, which was delicious, but after some sleuthing online (and being extremely hungry from previous mentioned ordeal) I decided to also order the Pork Knuckle. Everything was extremely delicious, the dumplings in the soup were meaty but still light and flavorful, as well as the broth. The pork knuckle itself came with it's own soup with a slight curry kick to it that was nice, as well as a few sides that did a good job to balance the delicious, crunchy, salty pork knuckle. It was entirely too much food for one person with a stomach which had shrunk such as I, but I managed to finish off the soup and look forward to the rest of the pork leftovers that are awaiting me at the hotel. The detox drink I got was also delicious, and there were good happy hour deals that I would have definitely partaken in had I not been in recovery mode. Service was quick and attentive, and the space itself is gorgeous. Pricing extremely affordable. Recommend this place for anyone with a big appetite and no...
