Bale Udang Mang Engking Ubud: A Fishy Affair with a Touch of Tradition Let me tell you, this place was a total catch! The food was great, the atmosphere was serene, and the service was shell-abrating. But let's talk about the real star of the show: the variety of seating options! My kids, who are 6, absolutely loved watching the big, colourful fish swim beneath their feet from the traditional floor cushions, while we adults opted for the more comfortable chairs and tables. It was like a mini underwater adventure without getting wet and a comfortable seating experience for everyone! Now, don't get me wrong, the traditional sitting on the floor on cushions was a bit of a cramp for my aging joints. But hey, you can't have everything, right? I guess it's a small price to pay for such a unique and memorable experience. Overall, Bale Udang Mang Engking Ubud is a must-visit for families with kids. Just remember to bring some knee pads if you're not used to sitting on the floor, and you'll have a...
Read moreFive-star for the view and the ambiance, four-star for the food and drinks. Here's why.
It's good to be back since our last visit in 2015. So much has improved especially the staff's treatment towards us Indonesian. They used to be unfriendly. But today they're super accommodating. Keep it up!
We arrived before sunset and they asked us whether we wanted to choose semi-indoor seat or outdoor gazebo. I choosed the gazebo and the wait staff escorted us immediately to available gazebo and even offer us gazebo with rice fields and sunset view which was AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL.
The menu is already available on the table, standard. They asked us to hit the bamboo when we're ready to order. Quite a few menu items are not available, but that's not a problem.
We ordered rice for two adults, Sautéed Shrimp with Salted Egg Sauce, Sautéed Shrimp with Singaporean Sauce, Crispy Calamari as well as Pumpkin Leaves stir-fry. As of drinks, my husband ordered whole young coconut and I had Iced Tea. Our order arrived at a timely manner.
Here are my reviews for the foods & drinks The rice was fluffy. Standard rice you can find in most restaurants in Bali. However, the "bakul" that was used to serve the rice needs cleaning! Both shrimp dishes tasted fresh and the shrimps are pretty big in size, BUT--there is a pretty big but--can they REMOVE the shrimp's antenna???? It disturbed the pleasant eating experience. They can also consider to peel the shell (many people love peeled shrimp) and remove the head. Such a shame for such nice dish Crispy Calamari tasted okay. Nothing special and interesting Pumpkin Leaves Stir-fry is also okay. Slightly overcooked but underseasoned. What an unfortunate combination. The whole coconut wasn't served with ice cubes :'))
Overall, a truly pleasant experience. Might consider to come back if they decide to do my advice on the second point above. Just a feedback from a seafood...
Read moreWith huge regret giving this place 2 stars... hate leaving bad reviews, but I feel like the owners should look into the quality of food at the place as it has so much potential. Absolutely stunning place, mouhthdropping setting and amazing opportunity to be so close to nature; you get to feed the fish and sit in the bamboo hut, staff are very sweet and attentive, menu is lacking alcoholic choices (no cocktails), but the most disappointing thing was the FOOD!! Which is the main thing people come for... we were really looking forward to the seafood. Ordered the seafood platter and squid dish and spinach (they didn’t have a few veggie dishes on the menu we wanted )with highest hopes for the seafood. It was inedible... both myself and my husband still confused how it could go so wrong! We didn’t have a single bad meal experience in Bali... seafood doesn’t even need much, but it was covered with the thickest layer of very gross sauce which they called bbq, but it was more very sugary sweet and sour sauce. Even bbqed sweetcorn was covered in a few tables spoons of the sauce... what is the necessity! Clams and muscles (which were tiny) all had at least 1-2 teaspoons of the sauce within the open shell... Tuna and the squid were the only nice things and weren’t covered in the sauce, the rest of the food tasted like it was frozen and the chef tried to cover up the fact it was frozen with...
