We came here three times during our one week stay in Gili Air. Everything we tried was just so unique and delicious that we had to keep coming back!
Here were our favorites:
cracker snack - this was like an amazing bite of sushi. It had all the flavors and textures but without the fish.
bruschetta aravi - this was more like a fresh green salad on top of a dense delicious piece of seeded bread. It was fresh and delightful but you shouldn’t expect typical bruschetta.
soto - I couldn’t believe the flavor and depth of this broth. It was so savoury and wonderful. The ingredients were also very nice. But the tempeh had a sort of gooey outer coating which I wasn’t a fan of. It comes with a nice spicy sambal. I'm so used to always adding the spice to my broth but I didn't even need it in this case.
tofu ceviche- fresh and delicious. I could eat a whole bowl of it.
jackfruit and mushroom gyro - definitely a unique one. It's not in a gyro form so you need to eat it with a fork and knife. I'm always a fan of savory jackfruit and this dish was unique with nice flavor.
vanilla cake - this had all the good things. delicious vanilla cake with creamy amazing peanut butter and bananas and some chocolate. YUM
peanut butter truffle - I loved that you could buy a single truffle. One night I was so full but I still wanted a little taste of something sweet. This one was like a peanut butter cup but even better.
Not faves but still good: cauli drumsticks - The breading gave it nice flavor but it was a little too gummy/chewy for us to order it again.
beefless rendang - the sauce itself was nice and spicy and creamy. We really loved it. The meat alternative however wasn't our favorite. It was a little too soft.
olah-olah - This was still a pretty yummy dish. I just found it almost too sweet. But the combo with the rice and lots of veggies was still very nice.
The juices are also really fun to try. The seminar and lucumber were fresh and delicious. The Mangoes to Tropic is really unique and special, definitely try it if you like pandan.
The location is right on the beach and the service is excellent. Definitely come here to try it out,...
Read moreIt's mind blowing to read the reviews on this place... I guess it is reserved for tasteless people used to Coca and Burgers.
We went there to try because of all the food reviews.. but OMG, what a disappointment... 🤦
We were served a Rendang: could have been good but it was not eatable because of how salty 🧂it was (and I salt a lot my dishes quite a lot in comparaison to regular people). We were told that it was because when they asked if we wanted it spicy 🔥 we said yes : if you can come with a logical reasoning for having a dish extra salty instead of spicy because you asked it spicy , well you're ready to go to this crazy place ! 😅 The only pretty good thing was the tacos that were good (3.5/5), but nothing more. The tempeh were good (we asked them without any sauce, so probably why it was good). And so was the fresh tartare (4/5) Oh and the big error was to try their dessert ... 🤦 I guess it's for obese people in lack of their 1kg of sugar per day ... 🍬🍬🍬
But the issues with the food were not all : the staff were welcoming but definitely with some brain freezes : the entry was served in the same time as the main dishes : let's pretend that's ok even if eating your main cold isn't very enjoyable. 🤦 But while we were eating our main dishes, they served us... The desserts 🍰 ! Oh and you've got to know that the dessert were a bit frozen style : so they starting melting of course. 🤦 We had to ask them to bring them back to the fridge for the time that we were still eating our main dishes.
Oh and they have a shop next to the restaurant: be sure to check that the prices that you saw on the items correspond to the final prices : on some dried kiwi 🥝 boxes , the listed prices went from 100k to 120 or 140k (not sure) : we were told that it was an error of the...
Read moreFood: 3 stars Went here after reading raving reviews. Ordered cauli wings, cheez sticks and rendang. Only received cheez sticks and rendang, they had forgot the cauli wings, so we said never mind. Cheez sticks and rendang were okay, but in my opinion not amazing.
Host: 3 stars In general friendly people, friendly host, like everywhere on gili air. However, after they had forgotten our cauli wings, they didn't try to make up for it in any way (except waiting longer, basically ordering it again - but then our other food would've gone cold..). When we received the bill they had left in on there and when we made notice of this, they didn't apologize for the mistake and just took it of the bill after having to ask the boss.
Price: 3 stars We shared one appetizer (which should have been two) and one main course because we weren't very hungry and additionally we found it quite pricey compared to some warungs where we ate vegan as well. In the end it was enough for us, but if you're a big eater I can imagine having to spend a lot of money here - the portions were quite small, even for one person.
Conclusion, wouldn't recommend if you are not vegan - there are too many other restaurants that you might prefer. If you are vegan and don't have the same luxury of having many options, I would say you will have a fine...
