We read a lot of great reviews for Warung Sunny so had big expectations. Unfortunately we were let down by the service. Food was delicious once we were able to order, but the rest of the evening wasn't as good. Here are a couple of the issues we experienced:
Long wait to be served initially, then only after placing our orders did we notice other guests were shown the specials board which we were not. There is also no drinks menu so had to just order what I could see in the fridge.
My friend has an allergy to turmeric, and we had to ask two people before we had an answer we were confident with.
after 15mins we had to ask for our drinks (Coca Cola and Sprite) as they had not arrived - in fact our food arrived before drinks.
We were not asked how our food was or if we needed more drinks. (I'm being a little picky but all our other restaurant experiences here have asked).
After we finished our main meal all the staff had disappeared into the kitchen and there was no one around to ask for dessert. Had to wait a little while before they came out and then grab someone's attention before actually ordering dessert.
This was the only restaurant of our trip that has been disappointing. It's worth mentioning that other guests, clearly had a different experience as the head chef came out to speak to them and would have easily resolved some of our problems if he had done that to...
Read moreMyself and my partner Aga went to an Indonesian cooking class with master chef Hero, and were completely blown away by the experience.
I feel the need to strongly iterate: I do not enjoy cooking.
I don't find enjoyment in it as an art form, I don't do it for fun, and often feel like it is a necessary task that is inconvenient at the best of times.
This however, was completely different.
Hero and his staff were so helpful, so energetic, so enthusiastic, so kind. They orchestrated a seemingly impossible experience of effortlessly guiding us to cook 10 different dishes from all around Indonesia in little over an hour.
They had done all the initial prep work so when we showed up, Hero was able to share with us the history of the dishes and the step-by-step process we were going to take to make them all.
It was fun, dynamic, and I was blown away at how well Hero and his team worked together to make the entire process feel fun and easeful, rather than the burdensome task that cooking often feels like to me.
The feast at the end was the best food I have had in Indonesia, by far. We were even given take-away boxes for the leftovers (there was a lot), which extended the 10 course meal into the next day.
10/10 experience. I highly recommend this to anyone travelling through Gili Air Island.
Totally worth every Rupiah.
Bring a date. You...
Read moreReview is more specific towards a cooking class that we took here.
Myself and my partner attended a cooking class with the head chef Hero here and honestly looking back on it, it was dreadful. We've since taken a cooking class in Thailand which was very informative and we actually did 95% of the cooking ourselves. When attending Hero's cooking class he tended to repeat the same information over and over and seemed distracted. When it came to our involvement in the class, all we really did was pound a pestle and mortar for various curry pastes. That was it.
Hero really made the dishes himself, throwing a variety of ingredients in without a care or without any real discussion, his seemingly on a whim. It was a stark contrast to the class we took since which allowed us to choose our own 6 dishes from a menu to cook. And the worst of it all? We didn't like the taste of any of the dishes. We struggled through trying to eat them and gave up fairly quickly. Hero is a charasmatic man but unfortunately his cooking class, at least in our experience, was...
