Down a narrow hall through some pokey doorways, you find yourself in a dark room a throw back from a ye oldey pub. But updated with a really great modern food menu. I have no idea why we haven't been here sooner. But now we finally gotten around to it, we will certainly go back again ... And again. It's location in Westport can be overlooked fairly easy. Being packed in a dense area of cafes, restaurants and bars. But overlook this place and it would be your shame as this place is one of the small list of gastro highlights of Westport. Good honest pub grub ... And some added delights thrown in too. The star choice of our order was the Lobster and crab Ravioli. So creamy and delicious, is was a real pleaser that I am still thinking about now. It was a light bite, appetiser/starter, I wished it was bigger. But after thinking about it, the dish is so rich it's the perfect size. Leaving you wanting more and not over filling you the same way cream dishes can. This is a fantastic place for young kids in Westport. Offering traditional "kids meals" but dressing them in a fancy and more mature way. This engages kids at the table more then I have seen in other places. Something an actual adult would order and be happy to have in front of them. This is a fine line that is well executed here. I even found myself being jealous of the boy, the table over tucking into his buffalo chicken wings. But it was all good. My son ordered the Poet Burger, which left him as satisfied as a good Irish poetry. And I assume the reason for the name, which is well thought. Coming with extra which means the burger can be tailored to a wide variety of tastes. I had the Roast leg of lamb, a traditional staple any self respect pub should strive do well. A small extra slice of fatty end that I did appreciate, and for health wise thankful it was only a small piece. Perhaps a little unexciting plate compared to the other options available on the menu. But damn it, I am a meat and 2 veg kind of guy ... And it was worth it. My wife enjoyed the Brie wedges and the lobster and crab Ravioli. The ravioli was to see what it was like, and I was thankful as I also tried it and it was a firm favorite for us. The Brie was nice, and a perfect for cheese lovers. A very rich meal... But also it's deep fried Brie, so it doesn't count. This place is busy, and also small. So coming early is a must, and coming hungry is a good idea too. So many small rooms makes this a quirky and great place to eat. I had a phone call, and finding a quiet space to take it was a little difficult. But the pub also had a great atmosphere, where everyone enjoyed themselves and chatted freely. The waitress staff were nice and friendly. And even though it was busy did take time to make sure you were looked after and enjoying your meal. Other notable things were the mugs. Featuring a painting of the File bar front. It was nice touch to make this a little more memorable and unique experience for the customer. Tea was...
Read moreAn File Bar (the poet)* in Westport, Ireland, was our favorite eatery when we visited Ireland in April 2022. After our first lunch there, we couldn’t wait to return and did so several times. The traditional Irish pub is on the Octagon in the heart of Westport in County Mayo. It is a favorite of locals, but visitors like us also drop in for BL&D. The food is traditional Irish pub grub made from fresh and locally sourced ingredients. The menu is brief but covers the basics. The full-service bar serves Guinness (and other beer), wine, and spirits. The menu covers the basics of Irish cuisine. OUR FAVORITES — --Bangers and mash served with onion gravy and tasty red cabbage --Vegetable soup and brown bread (I could swim in the soup and live forever on the hearty brown bread and Irish butter) --Chicken sandwich on brown bread was made with chunks of chicken breast, Irish cheddar and fresh greens --Green salad with panko-crumbed goat cheese (a meal in itself) --Seafood chowder – don’t pass this one up; I still crave the creamy soup filled with tidbits of cod, shrimp, and mussels --A glass of prosecco is perfect with either soup --Guinness is a match for everything --Always ask for brown bread; it is unforgettable, healthy, and hearty Stop into An File in Westport for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a creamy Guinness. You’ll be glad you did. *This memory was inspired by family traveling in Ireland and eating at An file Bar Westport. We...
Read moreThe location was great, right in the center of things. The food and drink in the pub were great, too. Checkin was pretty easy, once I got the attention of someone at the bar. The beds were hard, and it was very hot, which meant we had to keep the one window open all night. That meant that the very squeaky gate across the alley that opened and closed well into the wee hours of the morning kept us up, and rattling bottles being thrown into the trash after the night's revelries was crashing loud. Even on the weekday nights, noise from the pub was a bit loud. There was also a door somewhere that slammed LOUD and was pretty regularly closed. The old-fashioned paddle key in the lock was very difficult to use, we had to ask for another. That was somewhat easier, but we still had to fiddle with...
