I took my better half here last night as a birthday celebration. I picked it based on the fact that we both consider ourselves to be foodies and love sampling London's fantastic&diverse food scene. There's lots of good places to eat in Westport but this was the first place I came across where there was a chef's tasting menu.
I emailed the restaurant, who were very quick to respond, on the day of the booking.
From start to finish, the tasting menu was an absolute delightful surprise. We had Dublin Bay prawns with (Kelly's of Newport) sausage for starter. Next we had beautifully cooked Ox cheek, potato and butternut puree. After this, we had a succulent piece of hake with a celeriac puree and new potatoes (cooked in garlic and butter). We then had a piece of delicious pork belly which was cooked in a maple marinade. On a personal note, I'm not a huge maple syrup fan but it was still quite nice. The final dessert course was enough to fill us to brim (sticky toffee pudding and a piece of cheesecake) so were a good measure of rich and light.
We, somewhat unusually for us, didn't have any wine (not due to the available selection) as we opted for some Hendricks gin instead.
The staff provided a warm welcome, introduced each of the dishes and the chef even came to the table to make sure we were enjoying the food. They also gave us some homemade limoncello to finish. For the quality of the food, you just can't beat it for price on a special occasion. I'd have paid twice/three-times as much for it in London so I personally felt like it was a bargain!!!
Thank you again to all the staff and the...
Read moreA meal of 2 halves. If you are into meat and game there is a fantastic selection, fish lovers are very limited. We were served cold, stale tasting heavy bread on arrival. Wine was excellent & served at perfect temperature. We had a Rioja reserva but also had a carafe of the French house red which was super & excellent value. Starters, the venison pithiver with savoy cabbage was outstanding, unctuous & delicious. There was only one choice of fish starter and it was smoked salmon nicoise, it was very disappointing and frankly not up to standard, the salmon was flabby & fatty. Main courses of venison and lamb rump, were again delicious, but the fish option was fillet of cod and it was terrible,: while it was cooked well, it was way over salted & served with a tasteless cream spaghetti and a weird pink watery sauce, very unappealing. Desserts unfortunately were also disappointing, rum baba was more like a Victoria sponge with cream & fruit, dry with no taste of rum, sticky toffee pudding was dry, apple tart was served fridge cold, the cheese board however was fantastic. Service was charming & efficient. I would definitely return but would...
Read moreI brought my boyfriend for his birthday dinner on Friday and we had an amazing experience. He's quite a picky eater so I was a bit anxious but the menu had great options, both for him and for me who'd be a bit more adventurous. I ate caviar for the first time and was not disappointed! The venison for main was full of flavours and cooked perfectly. But great food is nothing without proper service! We had Stéphane looking after us and he was everything you wish for in a waiter. Funny, attentive and knowledgeable. Finally, special mention for the wine list which is one of the best I've seen in Ireland. Well balanced mix of different wines from various countries that will suit all budgets. I've seen some reviews complaining about pricing but I think it was worth every euro as the quality of everything was top-notch. Also if you go for the cheaper menu, you can count around €55 pp for 3 courses and a glass of wine which is what you'd pay anywhere else. As we say in French, chapeau 👌 We...
