I've been to Italy many, many times, but this was the very first time that I've got ripped off this blatantly. I came to have a pizza for lunch, the waitress got me the menu, where the individual pizzas were listed with the corresponding price. I ordered a glass of tap water, got a bottle, reminded the waitress I ordered tap water, which she finally gave me. So far, so good. The pizza was average at best. I ordered a Parmigiana with aubergines, but I doubt they used Parmigiano Reggiano DOP, it had a cheaper taste. At the checkout the owner quoted me a much higher price. First I needed to remind her that I drank tap water, which she wasn't happy about. I wasn't aware ordering tap water was such a sin, other places don't have a problem with it, so it's definitely not some Italian cultural taboo. The next price she quoted was still too high, so I asked her how she calculated it, to which she sarcastically asked if now I don't want to pay the coperto either? I showed her the price of my pizza on the menu, then she showed me something written at the end of the menu, which I didn't quite understand, despite my decent knowledge of Italian. She said for lunch the pizza costs more, which was the first time I'd ever heard something like that in 20 Italian regions. It was written somewhere at the end of the menu, and I don't know why I should feel obliged to read the whole menu. The waitress noticed I was a foreigner, but she didn't say anything about this 'special price'. In the end I paid, as I wanted to avoid further outbursts by the highly unpleasant owner. In Napoli or Sicilia or pretty much any other place in Italy I would have been able to order two pizze for the price I paid, and gotten double the quality as well as friendly service. As I said, this was the first time this has ever happened to me in 15+ trips to Italy. You shouldn't overcharge people like that, it's extremely sneaky and unprofessional, but if cheating folks for a couple of Euros extra for you are worth the negative reviews, keep it up. Also, stop judging people for ordering tap water. You're already making them pay a coperto in a cafeteria-style bar without much of...
Read moreWent there for a slice of pizza with mozzarella and cherry tomatoes. I have been welcomed by a member of the staff saying ‘Hi’ with a very low voice and no eye contact. When me and my friend went to ask for the slice the staff was in a very low vibration, none of them was smiling or looking at us. I found it extremely rude; at certain point I even told them that is good costume to smile in front of you clients. This last statement didn’t receive any answer. Let me tell you that eye contact and having a friendly approach is the basic for any business based in human interaction. At the end I have been given the slice and I have not even been offered a drink with it. The pizza was extremely cold I have not been offered to heat it up either. However I could taste the good, but average for the town, quality of the dough which ,although the temperature was not appropriate, remained crunchy on the borders. My experience there was not a dinner but simply a take away and bad days happens to anyone, I will come back there pheraps in the future ror dinner to see if that was only an...
Read moreWe had a very good dinner at Pizzeria Paola in Ancona! The pizza was delicious—crispy just the way my husband likes it. We arrived right at 7 PM when they supposedly open, but were asked to come back in 15 minutes. By the time we returned, the place was already almost full—clearly a popular local spot!
We tried a pizza with potatoes and spinach. It was tasty, though we expected a bit more potato and less spinach.
A highlight was the half-liter of house wine for just €4—great value! The atmosphere was very warm and local, with people greeting each other like regulars.
Definitely worth a visit if you're looking for authentic, local vibes and good...
