Surya Gelateria — Restaurant in Bergamo

The ice cream itself is pretty good, average maybe even, not sure if it's authentic but it gets the job done and has a good texture. However, this is the first icecream shop I've ever been to where you're not allowed to try different flavours, I asked to try 1 flavour, one which I've never had before and seemed quite bizarre and the man huffed and gave it to me, my friend asked to try strawberry, which he's very particular about because not all ice cream shops get it right, and the guy scoffed and passive aggressively told us we can't try any of the other flavors, both of us were forced to blindly choose our cones and I personally didnt enjoy my choice of flavours. Could've been avoided if we were simply allowed to try a teensy weeny bit of ice cream, it made me quite uncomfortable that we weren't and I wouldn't pick this place again for that reason. Regardless of what reason they have for prohibiting ice cream tasting, still quite a ridiculous policy to have at an ice cream shop with a large and relatively unique selection of flavours.

TL;DR: rude staff, mediocre ice cream, absurd policies, wouldn't recommend.

PS. I was really holding back writing this review, but looking at the other negative reviews mentioned the same cold customer service and all of the owners pretentious replies to any criticism of his own negative service is just sad. I hope the owner sees this because I simply want to open his eyes to how he comes off to the average individual; I came twice into your shop, once at the beginning of my trip and once and the end, both times I felt unwelcome, forget about the ice cream, your unfriendly attitude spoiled its flavour. Undeserved high rating. I hope people read my review before deciding to go here, and I hope for the love of God the owner reads this (which he probably will because he's a defensive chronically online old man that can't take any positive criticism if his life depended on it).

Edit cause this man is an excellent rage baiter: I updated my review because I wanted to give you what you asked for, a fair review, not the half-assed rating when I was still angry, so here you go, this is what I think of your shop, so mock my review, username, or response as much as you'd like, but it doesn't change the accuracy of my account of my experience as dozens of other people have endured the same cold customer service that you wouldn't expect from a simple ice cream shop. Lastly, your argument doesn't stand, icecream shops, traditionally, allow customers to try their flavours before ordering. I've been to over 5 shops in italy and yours was the only one that gave me trouble in that regard, it's not like your icecream is made out of gold, wouldn't kill you to be a little generous. Check my account, I've never left any other reviews, but my experience at your shop was so revolting I felt the need to warn others of the negative atmosphere masked by your average gelato. Yes I'm petty, but you're no better. You hypocritically call me a keyboard warrior while you systematically attack and break down every single true negative review left on your site, who's the keyboard warrior now huh? Yap all you want, I hope this comment reaches the correct people, and I hope you retire soon because people like you dont deserve to work in customer service. There, back to 1 star, I thought maybe you'd take my feedback to heart but no, you clearly don't deserve any rating higher than this.

One Saturday night we were desperately waiting for the airport bus at the stop in front of the Gelateria Surya. The bus didn't come, several bus services were missed, passers-by could not help. The lady in the Gelateria immediately helped us, called a taxi by phone, and the taxi arrivals stood there with us on the street and kept the soul within us. The Gelateria is beautiful and we sincerely regret that we didn't have the opportunity to taste the ice cream. But since we have reached the plane, there is a chance to visit Bergamo again and promise to taste all the ice cream. Two grateful ladies...

We first came to Bergamo in 1999 and we stayed a few doors down for Surya. We ate it every day we were there and loved it. Now, 25 years later, we visited Bergamo and it was still here!!!
