Antica Hostaria Massa dal 1848 — Restaurant in Caserta

Well, the first few steps into the restaurant were nice. Nice space, friendly host and hostess.

But, if you are looking for some type of Italian culinary experience better than - I dunno - the Olive Garden - keep on lookin’.

The service was atrocious. Not just for us, but for every table in our vicinity. Everybody hold up your glasses at once! Not in celebration, but because you have been without a drink for over an hour. Or - as somewhat amusingly happened to us - a waiter teases you with your unopened bottle of wine sitting on your table for a half hour.

But, perhaps the food can redeem it? Nah. The pasta was a rotten-fishy flavour, not a fresh-fishy one. The deep fried squids were frozen popcorn shrimp dressed up as a fancier cousin for the night, and the sample platter of cooked meats looked as grey as the old cobblestones outside. Ok, the pork - while grey - was pretty tasty. But the potatoes had zero seasoning and would have had a better fate as part of a McDonald’s happy meal.

The desserts were ok. And there’s a cool hole in the ground where you can see an old basement or something. But... you’re in Italy! Go...

The amuse bouche was a tasty starter, with almost a soft meatloaf consistency. The salad was a strange combination of cantaloupe, arugula, corn, and a loose bufalina cheese. The flavor combination was not delicious. The beef was delicious and fatty. The meat, vegetables and fried potatoes needed seasoning as they were a bit bland. The cocktails with Prosecco were the best part of the meal.

The order of service was a bit odd. We ordered, and my salad starter came out with her main. Then we had to had to ask for my main as if it was forgotten. Btw, we both ordered the same main. Also, the drinks did not come until mid way through our first course.

Service was terrible, so rude and unhelpful, food was rotten had lobster with pasta it was disgusting and had a terrible smell, would definitely not recommend this restaurant at all, there are other restaurants round about the area, try them please.

This is definitely not a fake review,I have been raised by an Italian Mother and Father and I never tasted food so vile, I asked for Birra with lemonata and the waiter was rude, it was also raining that night and rain was coming through the roof. You also explained that the chef had mentioned the lobster was from a bad batch he should have never served it, please just accept...
