Osteria Nova — Restaurant in Castiglione del Lago

Disappointing service & prices — once a favorite, now a let-down

We’ve enjoyed this restaurant many times over the years, but tonight was a shock.

• Two large groups were given the undivided attention of the only waiter while we sat unnoticed. • The “water menu” listed bottles up to €26 — already a red flag. • After 20 minutes we still had no water (we had ordered regular), no bread, no plates, and no menus. Another table that arrived after us did however receive all of this. • When we finally tried to order, we were told it was all or nothing: either the entire table chooses the 4-course menu or no one can — even though only three of us wanted it and no mention is made of this on the menu nor by the waiter. • The white wine arrived warm, nowhere near proper serving temperature. A bucket of ice took forever to arrive at the table • Two of our group left to find another place; the rest asked for the check, which took another 15 minutes to arrive.

Very disappointing experience. Sadly, what was once a reliable spot for us has clearly gone downhill. We ended up at La Terrazza — still a favorite — and had a much better evening there.

Owners are perfectly on track to make this a restaurant where price vs quality is...

We finally tried this place as it looked quite nice . It took some time before a waitress came and gave us the menu ‘s , even though there were only 3 tables on the terrace occupied . We had to call and wave for her . The Prosecco to start with was without any sparkling ( as the bottle was opened at least a couple of hours before ) . My husbands glass of Prosecco was filled from another, also half full bottle without sparkle . The starter of cod fish balls should absolutely be taken from the menu : 3 small , dry , not even baked tasteless balls for 15 euro !! What a shame . The veal meat and tuna tataki were ok . Service is basic , as it was not crowded at all and still had to wave and ask for the already ordered wine ( forgotten ..) by the start of our 2 nd plate . Summarizing : nice terrace , good bread , 2 nd plate ok , but service has to improve , plates are too expensive for what you get . They ‘d better keep the focus on their garden parties , because there are many other and much better places to go out and eat in Castiglione DL . Same remark for their wines .Almost no local ones...

Osteria Nova è un ristorante "gourmet" che però, dal mio punto di vista, deve migliorare ancora un po' per potersi definire tale. Sicuramente molto pretenzioso sotto certi punti di vista (ho frequentato 4 o 5 ristoranti stellati e non avevo mai trovato la "carta delle acque", con bottiglie tra i 10€ e i 20€ di prezzo), è rivedibile per altri aspetti. Andando nel dettaglio:

1. location: piacevole e curato l'arredamento generale, carina anche la terrazza con vista lago (anche se quando il sole cala tende a essere forse un po' troppo buia e popolata da numerosi insetti, ma di questo non si può certo farne una colpa al locale)
2. servizio: in generale non troppo ricercato ma cordiale; tuttavia a un certo punto ho iniziato ad avere l'impressione che la cameriera cercasse di spingere per farci scegliere i piatti che facevano comodo a loro per "svuotare il frigorifero". La persona che ci ha servito ha infatti cercato un paio di volte di spingerci verso uno dei menu degustazione "al buio", decantando il fatto che si trattasse di "percorsi scelti dallo chef"; solo quando poi abbiamo optato per il menu alla carta è saltato fuori che ben tre piatti erano terminati. L'impressione che ne abbiamo avuto, quindi, è che i menu degustazione a sorpresa attingessero più che altro a ciò che era disponibile in cucina, non che si basassero su dei percorsi culinari pensati e ricercati. Oltre a questo, abbastanza scorretto non menzionare il prezzo delle tagliatelle al tartufo (proposte fuori menu data l'indisponibilità di tutti gli altri primi di terra).
3. cibo: menu vario, che spazia dai piatti solo terra, a quelli misti, fino a quelli di solo pesce. Per quanto riguarda la qualità della materia prima e il gusto dei piatti, il risultato è altalenante: alcuni elementi sono sicuramente molto apprezzabili (ottima la chianina, sia sotto forma di tartare, sia scottata), ma in generale certi abbinamenti restano un po' incompiuti (se si ha il coraggio di proporre accoppiamenti un po' inconsueti come chianina e scampo o capesante e foie gras, mi aspetterei una migliore amalgama a livello di gusto). In generale quindi, un posto che secondo me è a un bivio: può scegliere di puntare in maniera decisa la strada gourmet andando a migliorare sotto certi punti di vista per cercare di collocarsi in quella fascia di ristoranti "quasi stellati" che riescono anche a fidelizzare parte della clientela, oppure può rimanere com'è cercando di funzionare bene come meta attira-turisti, frequentata da persone di passaggio ma che...
