Exhausted from a day of sightseeing on Christmas Eve 2019, my wife and I came across Pantarei on the way back to our accommodation and noticed that it would be open that night. As it was only a block away we went back a few hours later and walked in hoping for the best. As it turned out that night became one of the Top 5 dining experiences of our three weeks in Italy. The food was superb and the wait staff were excellent. The menu had more than enough vegetarian and pescaterian options for us and the prices were very resonable given the portions and quality. The advice we got from our waitress regarding our drinks selection was also spot on (and a very merry time we had!) In retrospect we only wish we had come a little later in the evening. Pantarei is quite a deal bigger inside than you might expect and so seemed very quiet at 6.30pm. If we had come a hour or so later we would have fully experienced the crowd that began filling the restaurant and made it a very happening place (at that stage of our trip we still hadn't gotten the hang of dining in Italian time!). Watching host Marcello greet and converse with his customers was entertainment in itself. We thought he couldn't possibly know everyone... but by the end of the night we felt that he was one of our longtime friends. The Baccala balls are obviously a new low due to cost cutting, as they were a staple order for me. The Chicken Caesar Salad was akin to an African salad bar with very low quality produce. Working in Africa the last 10 years, I'd know. That is not a light comment. The pizzas were typically great, however, I always rated you 4-5 stars but after last night, and the previous 2 orders, well, I don't know if you've got a new chef, or I just got multiple bad nights, but a mid week order shouldn't be such sub par. I was asking about the dishes, what I can order due to save time because I just arrived and wanted to make take away order for me and my family. I was told that I have to wate for 30 min Okay. Also to stand like near the till because it’s take away. I ordered one glass of wine to wait while the order getting prepared. HE refused Despite I paid 120 Today when I arrived I asked the colleague of that strange worker to take a sit because felt really bad and came back only because of the nice attitude of a waiter.
