Piazza della Libertà — Attraction in Florence

Piazza della Libertà (Italian pronunciation: [ˈpjattsa della liberˈta]) is the northernmost point of the historic centre of Florence. It was created in the 19th century during works to produce the Viali di Circonvallazione around the city. It hosts Triumphal Arch of the Lorraine and, in winter, an ice rink for skating. History and architecture A clearing around Porta San Gallo has existed since the fourteenth century and its name has historically been Porta San Gallo Square. In 1738 the square's Triumphal Arch of the Lorraine was erected to celebrate the arrival of the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty in Florence.

In 1865, the demolition of the medieval walls allowed for a new reshaping of the area by the architect Giuseppe Poggi, completed by 1875 in the present elliptical shape square, surrounded by palaces. In the middle of the tree-lined park is a pool with fountains in front of the triumphal arch.

The square was named Camillo Cavour square, changed in 1930 to Costanzo Ciano square, in 1944 to Muti square, and in the 1945 permanently to Piazza della Libertà or...

A very surprising place. Close to the center, is surrounded by circle buildings and offers a refrigerate place where to stay. A beautiful statue in the middle of a very small lake, confirm the importance of the place, because it belongs to Artist Marcello Tommasi, a very famous Artist passed away some years ago and very talented and appreciated. All around, is possible to find nice places where to eat. We suggest the Caffè Libertà and the other small "shops" nearby. In few meters it is easy to reach the main square piazza S. Un altra stupenda piazza per anni crocevia dal traffico fiorentino e recentemente completamente rivoluzionata dal nuovo progetto di mobilità fiorentina. (1) Ma piazza San Gallo ( oggi piazza Libertà) e veramente tanto tanto altro. Con i suoi 24.000 mq è anche una delle piazze più grandi d' Italia e di Firenze. Contornata dagli splendidi palazzi del Poggi edificati a fine 800 che rappresentano nuna delle poche zone porticate della città. (2-10) La piazza ha cambiato nome più volte. Il nome originario era Piazza San Gallo per via di uno stupendo Convento costruito ove adesso sorge il Parterre. La costruzione di deve a Giuliano di Francesco Giamberti che vista la bellezza della costruzione venne poi denominato Giuliano da San Gallo. Tale superba costruzione con annessa chiesa dedicata a San Gallo, apostolo della Svizzera, vennero distrutte durante l'assedio del 1529/30 per fare terra bruciata oltre la cortina muraria.

E porta a San Gallo (14) è anche il nome della stupenda vecchia porta, edificata nel 1294 da Arnolfo di Cambio, che dopo l'abbattimento delle mura arnolfiane campeggia isolata a centro piazza. In epoca risorgimentale il nome mutó poi in Cavour prosecutio della omonima, mentre nel 1930 divenne Piazza Costanzo Ciano. Nel 1944 nuova modifica e la piazza venne denominata piazza Muti ed infine dopo la liberazione divenne Piazza della Libertà come ancora si chiama oggi. Davanti alla porta l'altissimo Arco di Trionfo (15) che con un' occhiata fugace potrebbe sembrare recente oppure ottocentesco. Invece venne eretto, velocemente ,nel 1738 ( 100 anni prima di quello parigino), su Progetto dell'architetto Joadad, e promosso principalmente dal marchese Ginori forse per celebrare l'ingresso a Firenze di Francesco Stefano di Lorena ( che poi fu anche l'unico)o forse per ingraziarsi i suoi favori. #inchepostiviporto #firenze #florentia #arnolfo #piazzasangallo #piazze...
