We stayed at the Miralago Hotel in Garda 13th-20th September with Thomsons. We had a good experience in the hotel with a lovely room at the front with a balcony. It’s a pity I had seen some poor reviews about rooms before we went but our only complaint is that the view of the lake from a seat on the balcony is obscured by trees which can’t be helped but we could not see people walking up and down the promenade because the flower baskets were in the way! The flower baskets are very pretty but a bit impractical in their position at eye sight level when sitting down, perhaps they could be lowered?||The room was plenty large enough, clean and comfortable, although another chair would be helpful. (We dragged in a chair from the balcony) The bathroom was well stocked and pleasant although a couple of tiles had been cracked and repaired but that was ok. The room was cleaned and made up each day with fresh towels provided. Like others we didn’t understand the presence of thin cotton ’towels’ but ordinary towels were provided as well. ||We arrived at the hotel very late at night due to a flight delay (another story) so no-one from the hotel was available to greet us. (We were shown to our room by the Thomson rep) We understood that but unfortunately there was no information in our room about breakfast, how to use the air conditioning or the TV. Please could you look at this.||Breakfast was basic but acceptable. As I needed other fruit because of an intolerance I only had to ask and it was provided. We had a choice of cereal, fruit, scrambled egg, ham, cheese, toast and jams or honey and various croissants. After all there are only 12 guest rooms to cater for and yes there was no bacon but we were in Italy not Brighton!||In the evening we had some fabulous a la carte meals at 10% discount as residents. We had seafood paella, seafood risotto, salmon, sea bass, escalope of pork, chicken and entrecote steak which were all excellent. The only disappointment was the desserts - only types of ice creams. I would have enjoyed some Italian desserts on the menu. On one occasion we decided to go to another restaurant which had been recommended on websites and by Thomson’s - what a disappointment! The restaurant was obviously suffering from it’s own popularity and we felt rushed and herded in and out rather too quickly and on top, the food was mediocre.||We would like to thank all the staff at the Miralago and hope I’ve remembered the names correctly but particularly the owner and chef Libri, his wife, Adele, the housekeeper, Anton and the head waiter Buri who all made our stay so enjoyable.||We chose the Miralago as it seemed from the map that it was close to ferries and life around the lake. This was the case and we enjoyed trips to different parts of the lake throughout our stay. The market which travels around the lake every day was in Garda but not in front of the Miralago so it didn’t spoil our enjoyment and I could browse through it easily.||There were lots of little shops and restaurants/cafes and alleyways to explore in Garda, Bardolino and Lazise. We went on the half day Isola del Garda trip to a private island in the lake, a full day bus trip and tour around Verona and a full day guided coach and ferry trip all round the lake stopping at the main towns. These trips were interesting and allowed some own time exploring. However, for someone like my husband who cannot walk far, there doesn’t seem to be much help. There is no indication of how far people need to walk when booking trips and as more people with mobility issues travel why can’t arrangements be made for extra transport or a place to have a coffee/rest while others explore. When we went to Isola del Garda, a golf cart was made available by the organisation there to transport my husband to the villa but in Verona I had to leave him to find a café on his own and on the lake tour there would have been an impossible walk from the coach to the ferry in Limone. Fortunately our guide was able to arrange for someone from a hotel by the ferry to pick him up in an electric vehicle.||We had expected warm weather for that time of year and had packed clothes accordingly but it was cool, rainy and thundery most of the time except the last day. Also I had hoped to go swimming in the lake but opportunities were too far away, the weather was poor and no-one else was swimming - I wouldn’t have gone in on my own!||So in conclusion, lovely hotel, convenient with good evening food, lovely views and good for...
Read moreI mirror the opinions in the last two reviews having just returned from a week's stay at this hotel with Thomson UK. On arrival we were told that we could only stay one night in the room allocated (with a side balcony - don't bother) as someone else had booked the room so we had to move rooms the next day. We were told we would be given a bottle of wine as a consequence (no wine materialised!). The original room had a balcony that sits between two buildings and really wasn't worth it as it overlooks an alleyway. That room (201) wasn't very nice either - awkward furniture layout and a bathroom door that banged into the bidet when opened, The second room had a better layout and bigger bathroom with a view of the next door building's wall and it was small, tired and in need of refurbishment. The bins are put out at 6.45am (very noisy) and the plumbing in the hotel is guaranteed to wake you around 7am if the bins haven't. We were unfortunate enough to be in a room with neighbours that must have been unwell as they spent two nights using the loo every 30 mins during the night (and yes you can hear everything including a very creaky toilet!) so we got very little sleep those two nights. The fridge in neither room worked and there is no room/hotel information stating the costs of the drinks in the mini bar so we assumed naively that the warm bottled water was included and ended up with a 21 euro water bill. The room keys are stored on a rack located in a lobby area accessible by the general public using the restaurant loos and other guests. As it includes the key for the in-room safe and offers no security whatsoever we removed the heavy keyring and took the keys with us. The breakfast was adequate but as someone else said there was always something missing. The rooms were very clean but I would recommend staying at one of the better hotels located away from the lake side as the view from your room is likely to not be a lake view anyway so it's not worth compromising on quality to be closer to the lake. The resort is so small that you really don't need to walk far from the lake to stay in a nicer hotel (we previously stayed at Hotel Sole pre swimming pool and that was far nicer and provided a much better service for about the same price). We did eat in the restaurant and the food was actually very nice and reasonably priced although the restaurant area, like the hotel, could do with refurbishment/updating. Definitely go up a star when picking a hotel as I would say that this 3 star is the equivalent of...
