The food IS amazing, there is no denying that. However, after being pulled-in off the street with the offer of going up to the terrace, we were taken through by what I can only assume was the owner (female mother). She took us through and up, and when presented with a less-than-half-full terrace, were told that we could only sit at the table furthest from the side with a seaview of the castle. Even though there were plenty of free tables both on the preferred side and in the middle, we were told in no uncertain terms and with no explanation, that the only table for us was this specific table furthest from the sea view... the only view we had, was of the bins and clean up area. We felt absolutely disrespected.
Several steaks were off the menu. We selected a starter, a pasta, 2 expensive steaks with extra sides and asked if we had ordered too much. The head waiter insisted that we hadn't..... we totally had... by a long shot.
After the 1st starter, we asked a younger waiter if we could be moved, since looking at the bins was an awful experience. In broken English, he indicated that the tables we enquired about moving to (since they had been empty for 30mins) were reserved... he then just wandered off.
45mins in, 2 starters down and about to get the main course, the terrace is only half full. The balcony has been fully taken by locals... possibly reserved, but who knows. Either way, there were still plenty of tables in the middle... At this stage, anything was better than staring at a bin and listening to a waiter's phone perpetually ring while you watch the waiters scrape plates. We pleaded with the head waiter, and thankfully, he moved us to the middle.
As we were closer to everyone else, you could tell that we were 1 of 2 foreign couples in the establishment, everyone else was local. The other non-local table was also treated the same and also moved tables half way through their meal. I've never jumped to raising the race card, and have been nothing but amicable, accommodating and willing to take on other cultures, trying to speak Italian where we can, (and we could not be mistaken for being cheap trash) but we really felt unwelcome. On this particular night, all the Italian patrons were provided extra friendly service and prime treatment on anything that could be considered a nicety. Other poor service reviews include Italians... so who knows what's going on here.
While the food was of a very high standard, the experience ultimately meant we left feeling frustrated and unloved. It was a shame really, since we were happy to splash out for a memorable evening towards the end of our stay. It was memorable for all the wrong reasons and not what you expect when they're clearly attempting to be a higher standard establishment.
They have no locks on the toilet stalls and the doors swing open for the rest of the restaurant to see. Hold it in if you value your privacy.
Ultimately, the high standard of food absolutely does not make up for the contempt we felt from the woman in charge. It's not worth...
Read moreI made the mistake of having a pizza at Calisce and it was horrible compared to the artistry at Pirozzi. This is solid pizza. The crust is possibly the second best I have had between Naples and here, with only Attilio surpassing it.
It’d be better if they had a red house wine on offer, but they don’t, so the per glass price can be up there.
But this is where the locals eat.
The ripieno is listed as a pizza but it’s actually a local Naples calzone-style stuffed with mozzarella and ricotta, ham, and marinara sauce. I’m a fan.
The hours have been listed on Google and Facebook as being open till 4 for lunch but I’ve gone by at 3:25 and seen them locking up because no one is in there, so I’d arrive before three if you’re looking for lunch.
They have nice free spot of a bit of beans and bread that is really nice. Sometimes a spot of complimentary pasta too. Don’t worry, they won’t charge you for it. I’m fond of it.
And yeah, it’s the only good place open in the...
