I was on a mission to find ossobuco for dinner on my one day in Milan before heading south. I looked at some places but they seemed overpriced and very touristy. El Barbapedana is a small restaurant a short distance from the busy bustle of the Navigli canals. I made a reservation for one person earlier in the day as I was solo traveling. I arrived at 9 pm for dinner. I went right for the ossobuco with Milanese risotto and it was incredible. The veal, the marrow, the risotto, all sensational. The chocolate salami was decadent and the perfect sweet ending. The waiter was friendly, patient, and welcoming. And the best part was that every table around me was speaking Italian. Quite the contrast from the canals of Navigli where every table eating around me was speaking English while I was enjoying my pre-dinner drink. I'll make El Barbapedana my first stop next time I'm in Milan! It was a lovely, homey, and delicious experience.

Gem of a place. Visited as local dishes, good reviews and close to my hotel. Arrived without reservation just after opening and already fully booked. As a solo travel asked me to try on an hour or so later, again not a problem as hotel nearby. Went back as suggested, still full but went out of their way to find me a seat. Small beautiful restaurant, super tasty food (why with only a few ingredients can yours never taste the same) and both the gentleman and young female who served me were both super friendly. If you’re in the area I would highly recommend.

We visited El Barbapedana last Monday (9th June) while visiting Milano's Navigli area. We were a group of seven Australians, and we were welcome by the restaurant owner's daughter who served our table and entertained us, telling us stories about her father and the restaurant. The food was amazing, all delicious local dishes everyone in the group enjoyed. We had such a wonderful time, we would recommend it to anyone visiting Milan !!! And while there, check out the book translating Milanese dialect to Italian language, another treasure created by the...
