Milan, Italy - a city renowned for its fashion, art, and incredible cuisine. But tucked away in the bustling streets and crowded piazzas, lies a hidden gem - the Naviglio Grande. The Naviglio Grande, a historic canal that stretches over 50 kilometers, was once a vital lifeline for the city's transportation and commerce. Today, it's a charming destination for tourists and locals alike, with its picturesque bridges and colorful houses lining the banks. One such local was Luca, a young man who had grown up in the vibrant neighborhood of Viale Gorizia, just a stone's throw away from the Naviglio Grande. As a child, Luca would often wander along the canal, fascinated by the boats and the stories they carried. But as he grew older, Luca's love for the canal faded. He became consumed with the fast-paced life of Milan, chasing success and forgetting the simple joys of his childhood. One day, while walking home from work, Luca stumbled upon an old, abandoned boat docked along the Naviglio Grande. He couldn't resist the temptation to explore it and climbed aboard. As he stepped onto the deck, he was transported back in time. The boat was filled with old trinkets, photos, and journals, each one telling a story of its own. Luca was immediately captivated and spent hours sifting through the relics, imagining the adventures they must have had. But as he was about to leave, he noticed a small, leather-bound journal tucked away in a corner. Curiosity got the best of him, and he opened it to find an entry written in beautiful calligraphy. "My name is Isabella, and this is the story of my life on the Naviglio Grande. I was born and raised on this boat, and it has been my home for as long as I can remember. My family and I traveled up and down the canal, selling goods and making memories. But as the years went by, the canal became less and less busy, and our business suffered. My parents decided to settle in Milan, and I stayed on the boat, unable to part with the only home I had ever known." Tears welled up in Luca's eyes as he read Isabella's heartfelt words. He felt a connection to this unknown girl and her love for the Naviglio Grande. He knew he had to find her and hear more of her story. With the help of the journal, Luca discovered that Isabella was now an elderly woman living in a nursing home on the outskirts of Milan. He wasted no time and went to visit her the very next day. Isabella was overjoyed to see Luca and shared her memories of the canal with him. She told him about the beauty of the Naviglio Grande and how it brought people together. She also shared her worries about the future of the canal and how she longed for it to be restored to its former glory. Inspired by Isabella's passion, Luca decided to take action. He rallied his friends and neighbors in Viale Gorizia and organized a cleanup and restoration project for the Naviglio Grande. Together, they spent weeks clearing debris, painting bridges, and planting flowers along the banks. The result was breathtaking. The Naviglio Grande was once again a bustling hub of activity, with boats gliding along the water and people strolling along the banks, admiring the beauty of their city. Isabella was moved to tears as she saw her beloved canal come back to life. She thanked Luca and his friends for their hard work and dedication, and they promised to continue their efforts to preserve the Naviglio Grande for future generations to enjoy. From that day on, Luca made it his mission to share the beauty and history of the Naviglio Grande with everyone he met. He realized that this hidden gem was not just a canal, but a symbol of the rich culture and community of Milan. And as he walked along the Viale Gorizia, with the Naviglio Grande by his side, Luca knew that he had found his true passion - preserving the past while embracing the present, and creating a better future for all.

A lovely place to sit by the canal and have food or drink. There are a huge amount of bars and restaurants that span the length of the canal all the way from the lovers lock bridge back down to the main street. This area is a vibrant cultural place which comes alive at night. A word of ⚠️ though. This place has a lot of street and rose sellers so if you're looking for a peaceful and quiet spot, this isn't it. However it is definitely a place to visit as a couple or in a group. Would probably avoid this area with small children as the atmosphere is more of a party area with some small clubs and music. The bars are very welcoming and friendly and sitting out on the street whilst enjoying a drink or food is rather lovely.

What a wonderful nightlife area this is! We loved it so much that we came here both nights of our stay in Milan. It’s an area full of restaurants, bars, shops, and lots of people at night. I thought it was just a touristic area, but I was very pleased to see that it’s an area frequented by locals too. Besides the wide choice of cuisines that it offers, it’s a nice place for just a walk alongside the canal, where sometimes you can see some performances from boats. It’s easily reachable by subway, which runs “only” until midnight. No worries if you miss the last departure though: it’s replaced by a bus (at least on the weekends), which will stop at almost the same stations.

A huge canal apparently almost the size of Milan. It took 700 years to build. The boat ride was lovely. They gave us some snacks and drinks that we could enjoy on the boat while admiring the views. We were also given hand fans that we brought home. It's better to book tickets in advance. We only got the last ride when we booked on the spot. So roamed and explored until we were to get onboard. The Navigli village consisted of many things. Mainly there were cafes and the like on one side of the canal and fine dine restaurants on the other. We found a nice tiny brewery of gin out there. Gino12. They have a restaurant too. It was a lovely day at the village.

Unfortunately, our experience with Navigli Grande boat tour was incredibly disappointing. "Shocking" is the best word to describe it. The cruise itself was utterly boring, with practically nothing of interest to see along the canal. We had expected charming views and historical sights, but instead were met with drab scenery and a distinct lack of commentary or information. It felt like a complete waste of time and money. Perhaps we were unlucky with our timing or specific tour operator, but based on our experience, I would strongly advise against the Navigli Grande boat tour. There are far better ways to spend your time and money in Milan.
