Best Hunanese restaurant in Milan!
Maoji is an authentic Hunan street food restaurant hidden in a side street close to the Loreto metro station. Part of a bigger network of Hunanese restaurants, Maoji offers a great selection of dishes that are perfect to share with friends.
I recommend their wantan in chili oil or in broth, as well as the Mao Style Pork Belly (Pancetta di Mao) both amazingly tasty! Unfortunately, they don't have an English menu, but the staff is always ready to help with any questions or give recommendations. If they're out of a dish or an ingredient, they'll gladly recommend an equally tasty alternative! I've never been disappointed by the both the food and the service!
Besides food, they also have tasty milk and fruit teas at prices that are lower than the neighboring milk and bubble tea shops, but the tea does not disappoint! I recommend their Hong Kong Milk Tea, black tea with sweetened condensed milk.
Cheap and extremely good, I recommend this place to anyone who wants to try authentic Hunan food in Milan!
(P.S. spicy dishes are not labelled as such, and at Maoji the chili is not cut short! Please ask the staff about the spice level...
Read moreI visited on Friday 22nd November, twenty to nine. I asked for a table without a reservation, to try my luck. Attendant told me we can sit and eat until 9pm at our table, because he has another reservation at 9. As we came specifically for won ton soup, I asked him how long it’d take to cook. 15 minutes (in reality, 20 minutes).
We were tense as we awaited our food, of course, because we were told we only have 20 minutes to eat our food. All the while I looked at other tables being cleared and no customers being immediately sat down.
Order is taken, asked for a bit of chill in my wonton soup. Normally you can add the chilli oil yourself but apparently not here. The food comes, and two completely different dishes arrive, despite having asked for two of the same things.
Won ton soup à la Raw Water Spinach, and hardly boiled won tons splat in a concoction of chilli oil and e.v.o.
I don’t complain because I am already hungry. We get up to pay and see that the other room is clear of customers. Why the rush? Why the need to make us feel unsettled? And lastly, why is good Chinese food so hard to find in the...
Read moreThe second of the amazing restaurants by Mao Hunan owners, situated three-minute walk from Maoji. The place is so pretty, vibrant and fun, the service is quick, the staff is kind and the food is delicious! Maoji definitely stands out, they serve authentic Hunan food, with the main focus on street food, but on the menu you will also find dishes from both others Chinese regions and countries (they make a delicious Pho). Their Hong Shao Rou is the most delicious I’ve tried so far, alongside Mao’s. Don’t be afraid to order dishes labeled as spicy because they are not unbearably spicy (unless u you are not used to it at all), instead, if you love spicy food, you can ask to make it extra spicy for you or to have some chili oil on the side. You can taste the freshness and good quality of the ingredients, the price are maybe slightly higher compared to some others Chinese restaurants in Milan but even too low for the quality that they offer and the filling portions 🫶🏻
The restaurant can get crowded especially at dinner time, so I recommend you to make a reservation especially if you are more than one...
