I really don’t like rating restaurants low, but today I really feel like I have to. We ordered two pizzas and two mojitos from this restaurant, and honestly, the whole experience was disappointing.
Just two nights ago, we went to a different restaurant and got amazing Roman pizza - super crunchy and crusty. You could lift it up and it wouldn’t bend, and the tomato sauce on top was amazingly spiced. We hoped to get the same quality here, but instead we got a pizza with a very dry crust that wasn’t even precut. They served us cutting knives to do it ourselves - since when does pizza cutting get outsourced to the customer? I’ve never seen that before. What made it worse was that the pizza was basically drowning in cheese. There was so much cheese I thought I was eating pizza from a non-Italian pizza restaurant back in Germany - that’s what it really felt like overall. This experience actually took me back to those below-average non-Italian pizza experiences I had in Germany. I can’t believe I ate something like this in Rome, which is known for amazing pizza. The mojitos were just as disappointing. They were completely flat, as if they’d been standing around too long. Good mojitos are supposed to be fizzy and refreshing, but these just tasted like the ice cubes had melted and there was no fizz left. They also weren’t sweet at all - it was like drinking tap water with mint and rum.
Throughout our meal, we weren’t asked once if we liked the food or if we needed anything else, unlike other restaurants where they actually care about their customers. The seating situation didn’t help either - customers are placed so close together that having a personal conversation is practically impossible because your neighbor will be listening to everything.
Then when it came time to pay, we literally had to take our bill and walk to the front to the guy who could process our card payment. The guy had earphones in and didn’t say a single word - not even “grazie.” He just looked at the bill in complete silence while processing our payment.
Overall, it wasn’t a good experience as tourists. The combination of subpar food, non-existent service, and uncomfortable atmosphere made for a really disappointing evening. I’ll definitely be more careful when choosing restaurants in the future and do better research before deciding where to eat in this...
Read moreThis was the second time I ate here. Last week I ordered to go or in this country, they call it take away. Server/waiter won’t let me in. Night time and I was getting ready for bed. Wearing board shorts and slippers. Fine. Ordered and got pork chop, lasagna, risotto, carbonara and house wine. Pork chop was pink in the middle. Way under cook. Flavor was okay on the outside. House specialty which was the lasagna was good enough for my daughter and the risotto was not that special for my wife.
Today, we came back to have our last meal in Rome before we fly out tomorrow. Waiter was rude and it was me, my wife, my 5 year old daughter and my 1 year old son. But they only counted us as 3 persons and would like to have us put my 1 year old on the lap so they can fit more people in. We refused and they were pissed. Waiter took 20 minutes before taking out order. No plates and only 2 forks and knife. Normally you get soup first, but it was second to the last. Lasagna was the last. After I finished eating, i stood up so I can have my wife continue eating and get dessert with my daughter. He was already starting to get tired and crying. I was walking out and the waiter stopped me. He might be thinking I’m leaving and not paying. And I told him my wife was paying. He still refused and handed me the bill with 12% service fee. Please note they also charge us for the water they got from the faucet. I ordered sprite and never got that. All in all the meal was just €43. We had lunch today in Pianza and it was €80. I didn’t even flinched.
This is just a warning if you have kids and not white or Italian. They feel judgmental and...
Read moreAfter I stopped laughing at the review from the USA guy who says frozen pizza or any pizza from the USA is better 😂 I thought I’d better write a review for La Famiglia to set the record straight. I went here twice yesterday (I’m a chef from Australia) This place is firstly so cheap for its location, warm decor and popularity (it was nearly full of Italian locals at both lunch and dinner. Cannelloni 7.50 euro. I saw and empty tourist trattoria moments before with 13 euros for cannelloni. Anyway I’d strongly suggest to leave your comfort zone of ordering pizza or carbonara and trying the scallopini or risotto. We Had an absolutely amazing radicchio and Gorgonzola risotto thats was perfection. Earlier in the day my friend and I shared osso bucco. Roman style artichoke and salad. It’s simple and that’s the wonder of the Italian produce and the cooking style here. Some critics from faraway countries miss the whole point of Italian food by comparing it to home. Pizza in Australia can be good as well but I wouldn’t compare it to Italy where the topping are usually less but the integrity of the products and flavour are the beauty. Also the balance between the toppings and the crust are different. I didn’t have pizza here but I saw many flying out to the tables and the British people next to us had one each and we’re loving it. This place is delicious and amazing value. You can’t beat the 1 litre bottle of house wine they produce at 8 euros. All in all a gem in this area where there are some tourist traps near by. Enjoy! I also add.. our waiter who served us three days in a row was beautiful. So kind and...
