Based solely on what is in the museum, I would give it 6 stars if I could. There is an excellent selection of exhibits, a lot of older stuff most people have never heard of (alongside a section of 21st century games near the end), as well as boxes, cartridges and equipment also on display.
In addition, there are monitors with interviews (subtitled in English and Italian) with figures from the gaming industry, from the well known, contemporary, indie and the pioneers, they're well worth watching. The only small downside is how slowly they progress, so they take quite some time to watch all the way through (but it is worth it regardless)
There is quite a range of playable games, on a lot of arcade machines and regular consoles (including a Switch 2). I really appreciate history being playable.
However, this is where I drop my review down a star. A lot of these consoles/controllers are in poor shape - understandable for the arcade machines, especially the originals, but this is also the case for more modern playable consoles, with a cord being frayed on at least one controller, and some of them being quite worn out.
Outside of that, the games/consoles aren't reset properly. There was an Atari game that was softlocked, but I could not reset it because the console was out of reach. Some of the other games are left paused mid game. Additionally, some of the VR headsets did not work as they were out of battery and were not charged up.
Despite this, I cannot recommend this museum enough if you are a fan of videogames in any capacity. The asking price seemed a little steep to me, but I can confidently say I got my money's worth. I just wish the staff took better care of the exhibits, specifically the...
Read moreIt’s really a shame that zero stars isn’t an option. I honestly don’t know what we were thinking, other than just wanting to do something nice for our son and maybe give him a look into the world of video games or… honestly, I’m not sure what we were thinking. Anyway, I asked the staff at the ticket counter if it was appropriate for a seven-year-old boy, and they assured me it was.
The museum is in a basement with a very unpleasant smell, and it’s only suitable for older kids—maybe 14 or so—who can stay there on their own, have a strong interest in video games, and know their way around computers and everything else. Nothing else makes any sense, as some games are absolutely meant for adults, and even those require some level of experience to play. Above all, it’s really not suitable for children. Of course, they didn’t tell us this.
The information in English and Italian is only available near some old games or consoles. The games themselves don’t come with any instructions on how to play. So, this “museum” is questionable to begin with. It’s essentially an arcade with some props, and it’s certainly not suitable for children under 14. So, zero stars, and minus five stars for the staff who didn’t warn us about any of this. We were only guest in the museum maybe that’s das also...
