As a recommendation from a local, who explained beforehand that Sicilian pizza is different, that they use whole grain and the crust is thicker etc, we went to Calvino twice. Did not book in advance, had to wait about 15m to be seated and another 15 for the pizza. As we stayed in the counter top area at the entrance, I cannot really rate the interior. The Rianata pizza was delicious, indeed salty as others mentioned, but I guess it was because of the baked Pecorino and anchovies. I loved the taste, the crust and the serving, all cut in cubes in front of us.
Finally, for me, a simple tourist, I found the staff and their story very charming. The place is run by a Calvino, a grumpy looking man who does everything still with a pen and notebook. Inside the visible oven area, his son and other employees. Staff was ok, like I would expect in an old Trapani pizzeria, not too fakely polite as in a McDonalds... patience is the keyword, I got everything I came in for at the end of the day, which was a good pizza and a cheap dinner. I paid 9 for a medium Rianata and 6.5 for a small Diavola. No coperto, as I was not seated.
Note that I was there end September, so I might have avoided the annoyances of others regarding...
Read moreBest Pizzeria in Western Sicily! Maybe the best in Sicily? Pizzeria Calvino in Trapani has the best pizza I tried in Sicily, and the best atmosphere! It’s great thick, crunchy pizza. Instead of tomato sauce, they cut up fresh ripe tomatoes and cover the pizza base with them. The price is very reasonable. Many people stand inside the building, in the doorway, or out on the street while they wait for their order (order at the counter and they will give you a number. Make sure to know it and listen for it when they call it out!). The wait time for the pizza was regular. On a busy night, we waited about 5 - 10 minutes to order, and then under 10 minutes to hear our number called and receive our delicious pizza! There is no large sit down dining area, but instead, several small rooms with a couple of small tables and chairs in each. It was too full for us to “get a room” so we took our pizza with us in a box to go. This is NOT a touristy pizzeria but a pizzeria where the locals go, love, and recommend. If I could do one more thing in Sicily, it would be to eat there again! It...
Read moreFirst of all, I can’t find any words to describe how pleased I am. I have been to Italy for 5-6 times, traveled more than 10-12 cities and this was absolutely one of the best pizzas I had tried. The dough was amazing and the toppings were not exaggerated but sufficient as it should be. We tried 5 pizzas and we really loved nearly all of them. Especially I suggest you to try the one with parma ham and the Trapanese one they were fabulous. Additionally, ask the portions before you eat because even though they seem easy to eat it is even hard to finish one medium per person even though I am a 90kg man. Other than the tastes stuff was so kind even though they knew quite few english he always tried his best to help. He never lost his kindness even though he struggled. In a nutshell, this place will have a significant place in my mind as one of the best pizza places that I...
