What a wonderful surprise!! Heading out from our hotel we walked along the streets of Udine heading towards some restaurants. We wanted to find a locality that would give us the spirit of Udine, the specialties of food and wine. Not expecting any wonders we came upon this quiet tavern in the middle of the block looking like a local hangout. Walking in we took to a table in the corner just past the vitrine filled with what looked like regional specialties. Getting very comfortable and filling up with expectations since we both are big Italian fans. We waited and we were soon approached by what looked like the owner himself. He started listing the specialties of the day thinking to himself these two will probably order spaghetti bolognas and a glass of Chanti. I most gently stopped his presentation and stated that we are here to experience a very typical Udinese dinner filled with his specialties. I saw a glowing smile open up and with such speed he turned dashing off to his place of creation. Shortly there after we were approached by the waitress informing us in the most delightful Italian the drink list. I asked for a good solid white wine that would be good to go with our dinner. As we waited our attention turned to the customers and the decoration of this small jewel of a local tavern. Our wine arrived, along with water, the plates and silverware …. Then the owner appeared in front of us with his continuing smile explaining what he prepared for us and where the areas that our dinner came from. We had three menus with the most delicious food that I had in a long time. Fresh, will prepared, proudly served. Our time seemed to fly into a dreamland of delight that we didn’t want to leave. Our dog gave us the signal that it was time to go and he had enough watching all the delights of the evening go by his nose while looking over his water bowl. After thanking the waitress for her gentle but fun service, I went to the owner and thanked him for a most memorable evening. After some small talk I found out that his establishment is a two generation proud family owned with black and wihte photographs of his mother and father hanging on the wall. It felt like being at the family table enjoying home cooking at the hightest quality. I would recommend this experience to my close friends who can appreciate high quality food. Thank you very much for this grand...
Read moreWe had a great dinner here! The atmosphere was warm and friendly, with a fair few people both at the bar and also in the dining area. We hadn't made a reservation but were lucky enough to get a table on a busy evening! Worth calling ahead if you can. We were visiting Udine on holiday and don't speak Italian, however the hosts made us feel really welcome and made every effort to explain the menu to us. The food was delicious! We had a mixed meat and cheese board to start- really wonderful quality and such a great selection- and then gnocchi and cjarsons to share afterwards. We had a delicious local red wine to go with the food. This was our first experience of Udinese cuisine and it certainly didn't disappoint! Would...
Read moreThe host was wonderfully engaged in trying to get us food and drink, which was absolutely top notch. Uncomplicated food made right there in the kitchen using fresh local ingredients. Very popular with local restaurants, who sat talking and eating and drinking wine. We did not feel that we were intruding, but rather welcomed by all. We're going again for a second...
